Macro Lens or not?

  • Ramona

    Hi,

I really like taking close ups of different things/bugs/flowers etc. I don’t have a macro lens. Is it worth getting one? Or do you use your normal other lenses? And if so, do you use them reverse mounted or normally?

Sorry for all those stupid questions and thanks for any tips!

    Hi Ramona,
There’s no such thing as a stupid question when it comes to questions about photography.
In my opinion, if you can afford a macro lens definitely get one. Sigma do a 70-300 lens
which has a macro switch on it, its only about €120 in town and is excellent.
You can certainly reverse mount your lens but why bother when there are dedicated lenses to do the job?
If you really get into it, a macro bellows would be a good option for you, they are only
about 30-40Euro online and offer huge magnification in conjunction with your lens.
    Either way, have fun,
    Alan

Ramano, it really depends on the results you’re getting at the moment, so withot seeing what you’re producing now it’s hard to answer. But I asked the same question on here and another forum a while back and the overwhelming answer is that a macro will produce better quality shots, because it can get in closer and see the finer detail.
I am seriously considering investing in a macro lens soon, in particular the Sigma 70 or 90 f2.8 macro.
I suggest you check out the Macro section to see what lenses ppl are using.

    He’s a close up with a 18-50 f2.8 lens I shot and it’s not a macro lens.

If you love doing close ups, it makes sense to have a macro capable lens. The Sigma 105 EX is very good value for money.

As it’s easy to hit quality issues over diffraction limits, you might want to have a look at this software (free). It really is incredible!
