Hi there, I bought a Sigma 24mmF/2.8 AF lens for Canon AF off a guy on Ebay a few months back; when I attached the lens it took a few photos in decent light conditions but then began to produce an error message in my 400D saying something like “Error 99” ; Does anybody have any ideas what the problem may be??…..
Ok, I’ll try cleaning the contacts when I have a chance…hope that works; if it doesn’t work the it may be lacking the digital chip as you referred to and that would be a little more annoying (methinks selling would be an option  )
Lots of people had a similar problem with an earlier version of the Sigma 70-300mm APO. Sigma at the time I believe were offering a rechipping service, which I think was free, though I think it depended on the age of the lens in question. If the contact cleaning doesnt do the job, I’d probably try calling Sigma to see what they say.
I got that on my 350D and i have the 70-300 Apo sigma, Had to send my camera away to be repaired! took 11 freakin weeks!!! So yes error 99 is baaaaaaaaad
