From Madrid a couple of weeks back.

For anyone going that way, the pub is Taberna de Antonio S?nchez and what he’s interested in in both shots are the fabulous Flamenco singers (great session).

    Both taken at 1600asa.

Still can’t get my images to appear in the post, sorry.

It’s good to see oldschool bw candid shots here. They are not perfect, but they are really atmospheric. If you want critique, I’d advise you to crop tighter the first one, to the left from the guys shoulder theres no real interest and on the top you could cut above the bottles… just an idea.

    Nice pictures again,
but they look a little posed this time-
That man is used to getting his picture taken, it seems-

    when you say 1600 asa,
    are you using film?

pps, glad you like the bus pic :D

    Thanks,

I think the tighter crop would maybe be too tight and the till and snail sign add interest for me. Will have a go though.

They are digital shots and it was very very dark. not posed in any way. It fact I don’t think he even saw me as his total interest was the songs. It was hard to get a drink as he wasn’t interested in anything else.

I really like the first shot and I wouldn’t crop it at all. The surroundings are as important as the subject in this shot imo. I love the disembodied hand reaching for the bowl of olives..almost begging, while his attention seems elsewhere as you say.

On the second one, the bright light in the top right hand corner is very distracting and overall I don’t think this is as strong a composition.

I’m really impressed with your shots here and on your website Tommie..some very powerful and poignant images. Keep posting… :D

    Thanks Robbie,

You may be right about the light. I debated cropping it out, but left it in for the atmosphere.

Just discovered the 3200asa setting on the camera, so probably even more grainy stuff to come at some stage :D

I really like the first one. The bloke’s face makes it. Any shortcomings are quickly forgotten when I see that sparkling smile.

The composition of the second shot is a bit haphazard, somehow. The girl on the left looks a bit out of place in the photo.

    Pete thanks,

never been happy with the girl. She does look out of place. Unfortunate result of shooting at f1.8, depth of field is so shallow.

Love that first one, the background sets the scene and the smile on the bartender is a winner!

Unfortunately the subject of your second image is lost – the image is too busy. Crop it?

I really do like the first one though!
