I just got a 10 stopper this week myself so I was very interested in the post when I saw the title.
I love the effect a long exposure has with the clouds but I think the dirty brown looking water botton left is a lttle distracting and I think I had a similar problem when I was experimenting during the week. If it’s sandy or there’s a lot of seaweed in shallow water this seems to happen. Ideally (I think) you should be looking for a stoney sea bed with clear water for the best results with these type of shots.
This is of course all qualified by my 3 days experience so far
Thanks,
John.LWheelerParticipantHi,
I like this photograph – but am thinking that it might look better in black and white – have you tried doing a conversion to see ?

brendancullenParticipantThanks John & Lawrence.
I did go specifically today to get a ‘minimalist B&W’ shot – but didn’t think there was enough tonal range when i got home. The scale here is a little deceptive – as this little rocky feature is about 8’x4′. I shouldn’t have been out taking photos in harsh sunlight at 1pm anyway – but i got a nice tan in the process waiting for the images. The clouds & wind direction were perfect for coastal ‘long exposures’ today so i had to go.
The composition is perhaps passable. If i had reframed it – i would have had some headland and other rocks included – so this was as best i could do given the scene, sun position and desired outcome. 7pm would have been much better.
Here is the conversion for your honest opinion.

I much prefer the colour version. I would be very happy to have taken this shot.

LWheelerParticipantHi Brendan,
I can see what you are saying about the tonal range in the Black and White version, however that being said I still like it, and prefer it to the colour version.

DougLParticipantHey Brendan,
I may be in the minority here, but I’m not entirely convinced by the composition. I’m just not sure about the rock in the centre of the frame. I think it might work with a bit of negative space to balance it out.
