Matrix Metering??
-
AiscathParticipant
I would be grateful if someone could explain this to me in basic English!!! :? Thanks for all the info so far….putting it into practice of course is another thing!
SteveDParticipantMatrix metering is an incident light metering system which interprets a series of readings from different points around the frame to arrive at a suggested exposure. The method of interpretation may involve averaging of readings, ignoring any very high or low readings or the use of more complex computer techniques.

An incident light metering system?  Most definitely not!!!
Matrix metering is simply a fancy name for multi-zone metering, where the camera literally takes light readings from several different zones of the scene all at the same time and uses a bit of fancy software to determine what the “correct” exposure should be based on how bright or dark it was at each of the zones. More at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrix_metering It’s quite reliable although when faced with tricky lighting situations, you have no idea how the camera is going to interpret that so it’s best to stick to manual when faced with a difficult scene.
SteveDParticipantAiscathParticipantThanks for replies….when you are learning all the “lingo” can make things seem really difficult. Have a manual camera at mo when i get a digital (in next 3 weeks) i think i will take in more of what terminology means by practicing and being able to see results straight away.
AllinthemindParticipantMatrix metering (assuming a Nikon).
Breaks the frame up into a number of areas (the number of areas depends on the camera; 10 for the F80-, 1005 for the D2X).
The brightness in each area is measured by the in-camera computer and a comparison is made to an internal database. Something like:
The top areas are bright, the bottom areas are dark and the middle is grey, probably a portrait against a field with sky.
The Matrix system also looks at the difference in brightness (contrast) between the areas and the selected focus point and distance to calculate it’s final exposure.
The later matrix systems from Nikon also analyse colour to identify the type of shot, ie. fleshtones are probably skin, big lumps of green are grass etc.
This is a tricky system to try and compensate for as no-one really knows how the camera comes to its final conclusion.
