Paul Smith of Maximo Park. Didn’t enjoy photographing this gig at all, to be honest. May be down to work stress & general tiredness… but this band are a five-piece pop rock group, who like a very strong light on the bowler hat wearing lead vocalist, who virtually never keeps still and is quite an animated individual, and random bits of light here & there on the rest of the band – usually not when you’re prepared. Extremely frustrating. Getting the exposure was a challenge, far too much light (spin those dials one way) or too little (spin them like mad the other way).
Wanted to share these quick edits. Have a multitude of Paul, many blown but rescuable to some degree, but action shots were bloody difficult to pin down. Photographically it was a one man show. Practice practice practice is all I can put it down to. Enjoy, or please feel free to comment.

Oh Dear!
I myself who has been a Punk for 30 years always get annoyed and pissed off with comments like the above, yes I know this is a photography forum but Maximo Park are not even 1% a Punk Rock band.
The word Punk is bandied around far too easily….
Even their own MySpace they view themselves as Pop/Rock, Where did you get the idea they’re a Punk Rock band??
If you want to know what proper Punk Rock is or what are proper Punk Rock bands are feel free to PM me but here’s a snip of what a Punk Rock band generally sound like.

You’re absolutely right, Punk Rock, my apologies. Have corrected my post; should have given it a bit more attention. I do know what you mean though, I get just as annoyed when people bandy around Salsa for Flamenco (I’m very passionate about Flamenco – Salsa isn’t even 1% Flamenco).

Was wondering how you got on Sean – lucky you, you even got some side lighting! ;)
Being a “Manual junkie” I might do myself some favours by setting up my Aperture Priority with spot metering as a backup.

Cheers mate. :)
seanmcfotoMemberThe gig sounded great, but I had to head for another shoot.. great band though… defo mainstream “indie” rock… (i know that ironic in itself). Not an ouch of punk sensibility.
mehfestoParticipantI can appreciate these shots having seen them live several times.
Can’t imagine you had many shots that were not blurred! The 3rd shot is great. Really sums him quite well. That’s a rather ‘spiffy’ suit he has and all!
