MB-D10 not seeing camera battery problems

Need some help on this one…
D300 + MB-D10.
If I have batteries in both camera + grip, the setup only runs off the grip battery. When it dies, the camera dies, even though the main camera battery is fully charged.
If I take out the grip battery, everything comes back to life with a full charge bar on the screen. Likewise if I unscrew the grip entirely.
Seems that the grip does not see the fact there is a battery in the camera too…
Checked the firmware on the camera, and its fully up to date.
Totally baffled. Anyone seen this before?
ExpresbroParticipantExact same here. I’ve always taken the grip battery out to charge it before it went right down the end, but the battery meter shows as almost empty until i take out the grip battery.
Be interested to see if anyone else has this prob.
I’m sure there must be a fix out there somewhere.
CianMcLiamParticipantThat’s an odd one, that camera never had a problem with the batteries when I had the grip on it. Might be a problem with the actual grip itself.
There’s some settings in there for battery order and type but I’m sure you’ve both checked all that? I know there was a few QC problems with the shutter being too sensitive and vaguely remember hearing something similar to this, try searching DPReview forums.
ExpresbroParticipantAh right…might be the grip so Ken. It’s not really any kind if big deal since I’m aware of it. I’ve never even bothered doing a search for it until Sgt.Major reminded me of it here.
I do have the batteries set to use the grip first, then the Camera. There might well be some other setting that needs to be changed in camera. I’ll have a looksie through my Thom Hogan’s D300 Guide and see if there’s anything in there.

ExpresbroParticipantActually..now that I think about it..and after reading a few threads on Flickr about this, I’ve realised that I have never let it drain all the way down. I assumed that the battery meter would only drain down to 50% when the first battery is used, but apparently this is not the case. The battery indicator only shows the levels for the battery being used and when that finally drops below minimum it is meant to switch over to the second battery. I suppose that could be very confusing. But that is my understanding of it.
There is definitely a problem though as seen on this thread http://www.flickr.com/groups/nikon_d300_users/discuss/72157603766961903/
I’ll play around with it today and see what happens.
CianMcLiamParticipantAh I see, what about the meters in the menus? That should show both of them and their charge status. It’s a bit odd the way they have the indicator on the top LCD showing a single battery at a time and not the combined charge.
Anyone tried one of the third party grips? I see Hahnel have one with built in infra-red shutter release. Doubt any of them are built like the Nikon, mine is like a solid brick and will probably out last 10 SLR’s if they continue to use the same design!
jb7ParticipantI think I’d find it a bit of a pain to have to detach the grip to charge the battery,
and might therefore be tempted to use the batteries sequentially-
there’s no performance gain from having two, is there? The enel4a might be a better route anyway-
I wonder if this one is any good? The Nikon version needs a separate battery cover and an expensive charger,
so this looks like good value-
if it works…Sgt_MajorMemberjohnhigParticipantI use a pair of D300’s with battery grips attached and have had no problems with them what so ever, have ran the batteries in the grip all the way down and then it just switchs over to the camera battery automatically. Worked on both of them perfect. Mine is set to use the grip battery first then the camera battery. It is a pain taking the grip off to charge the camera battery but it’s not the end of the world..
