My boy Alex at 3 months. I was tempted to flip it vertically but this is how it was shot and I kinda like it. I just wish the crop above the chin wasn’t so tight but he’s a little wriggler and this was the best of the few I took today.
earthairfireParticipantYou gotta love this shot!
I agree on the chin / crop issue, but it’s a minor point.
Given the circumstances, I think you did a grand job! Those eyes are stunning.
My only suggestions to improve it would be to have lighting which gave a slightly more contrasty image, and to be careful of what is reflected in the eyes – is that you and a window I can see?
Tim
jb7Participanthello again Mort-
another edit,
lets see if I can do any better than last time-
lovely picture, and you have it the right way up alright-j
Not Pete the blokeParticipantJeez jb7, you remind me of my former self….. Have you ever heard of over-cooking??
jb7ParticipantNothing matters til you print it Brandyman-
until then, they’re only ideas –:D
BTW,
overcooking usually refers to pushing the highlights off the edge;
The edit I’ve done here is to open up the mid-tones using the Levels slider. The highlights have not been altered much.
I don’t think that paper white is too much of an issue in high-key childrens portraits anyway-
j
PeteTheBlokeMemberCrikey. The first version made me feel a bit disorientated, but JB’s edit is really spooky looking. Fair play to you, Joseph, you’re certainly an Ideas Man.
TangoMemberHi,
Portraits don’t normally do it for me. I find a lot of them can be very similar (especially of young kids)
But this one i really like….. It’s thinking outside the box and i like to think the kind of shot i’d frame and hang if i’m ever blessed with my own little devils.JB7
Have you been watching Casper the friendly ghost again? :D
T.
jb7ParticipantYou guys – !
Maybe I’d do a bit more work on it if it were my kid, esp. around the eyes, but its not, so I didn’t.
I don’t know what you’re looking at this on,
but at least one of you had admitted using a dodgy monitor today-
but if it were my kid,
I’d have something like this
up on the wall at 6×4.High key like this.
But more work to do on the mouth,
and the 8″ diameter corneas.I think its a striking picture,
and, if I were to interpret it to the point of printing it,
this is what I’d do with it-Each to their own, I hear you pray…

mortParticipantThanks for all the feedback.
earthairfire – God blees your eyesight! That is me and a window reflected in his eyes, unfortunately.
jb7, thanks for the edit. I’m not a big fan of the high key look but you’ve made me think about brightening it up a bit.
Much appreciated all.
ThorstenMemberJohnParticipantLove this one Mort, as a dad I wish I would have thought of taking one like this. Wouldn’t look the same on a older child. Very soft warm feel to it and the eyes are very expressive. Fair play M8 I for feel you nailed this one.
