    That’s alright Sinead-

Whenever anyone asks me what camera they should get, I always answer truthfully, and say I don’t know-
I’m never evangelical about any particular format or medium.
The only cameras I know anything about are my own.

There were two different questions here, with two different budgets, and two different answers…
and I don’t think those answers are related-

    Tom – thanks again.

Joseph – well, I’m a bit vague about it, I was even more vague when I first asked you your thoughts, and I did mention it with the Architecture thing in mind.

As far as the budget goes, well, I really had no idea of how much money would be involved, none at all, so I had to put a limit on it somewhere, or, I run the risk of getting carried away and spending, far too much.
There were also some things I had over looked, such as scanning.

I appreciate the advice everyone has offered.

I was flicking through an old copy of Black and White Photography Magazine last night, and there was a, Photography on a shoestring, article, written by, Lee
    Frost.
He was writing about a TLR, Lubitel 166. He had previously done another feature for a different mag, where he did a side by side comparison test with this and a Hasselblad 500CM.
The Hasselblad cost £2000-00 and the Lubitel £20-00
It was supposed to be a bit of a joke, but he wrote how he ended up being really impressed by the Lubitel, “…although the Hasselblad cost 100 times more than the Lubitel, it was nowhere near 100 times better…”

The average price (according to his feature) for Lubitel on ebay is £20-00.
I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, but hopefully I will later today.

I have a Lubitel 166 camera which I got on ebay for $25.

Yes its not a bad camera at all with a selection of f-stops and shutter speeds but the focusing takes a bit of getting used to. It does produce good negs though.

I always said those Hasselblads were way over priced

Some of your Holga shots are outstanding, Sinead… a better camera wouldn’t give you anything more than more precise control, reliability and extra sharpness, better image quality.

There was a Bronica RF645 rangefinder at a very low price on adverts.ie… just to suggest something different.

I believe though, that you are looking for a Bronica SQ… see if you will like Martin’s camera and if you could convince him that he doesn’t need it any more :)

But you can even get better light leaks with top dollar equipment than with the holga, just got this back today
    Sorry for the pointless tangent!

That light leak is fantastic, Martin.

And that is scanned with unsharp mask turned off. Holga users beat that!

Excuse me while I cry some more, sniff.

Peter – I’m really tempted by one of these now, do you still use yours?

Zoltan – now, stop… lucky, more than anything. I’ve just started to use a 120 Holga with a 6×6 back, so maybe I should stick with that for a while, see if I can get to grips with the square thing. There are limits with the Holga though, I’d like something I could use in low light, and indoors.
I’m thinking of using it for my next assignment, (fine art/open).
I don’t think I’d get away with using it for Architecture though!

Martin – that light leak is class! Is this from your Hasselblad?

Not as much as I should but I did use it during the winter and loved the images from it. PM me your email address and I’ll send you a pic. I’m sure its simple but I could never understand how to post pics here

Yes, I bought a dodgy cheap no-refund spare back which might be the problem, need to get it fixed. It was in the middle of a roll and effected just a few frames.
The good thing about Hasselblads is that you can change film halfway through a roll, one film per back, so extra backs are handy.

Well, I found my camera, I’m going to buy the, Mamiya 330S TLR my lecturer is selling.
I had a look at it on tuesday, and it’s in absolute mint condition, hardly looks used at all.

Really quite excited about it, can’t wait to try it out…

Thanks again all for your advice and suggestions, and pictures from different cameras, all very helpful…

Wish I could afford a Hasselblad, those light leaks are fantastic!!

You’ll enjoy the TLR. I’ve only just seen this thread, I was going to suggest scanning ebay for a RB67 with standard lens and a couple of backs. The lenses on the RBs and RZs are visibly better than the TLRs. Mind you, the mirror slap is deafening :

    Thanks Gigi, and, Si…

As far as I know the 330 doesn’t have a mirror, so, my ears will be fine… tee hee…

I’m picking it up next week, very excited now!
