… but are there any of the old timers out there? I haven’t been around much lately and am glad to have a bit of time to come back to PI. I’m not a facebook twitter – just been away/busy.

Anyway, it’s good to see that wonka, shutterbug, cathal, pixelle, sinead, sean and all are still here – along with Mark and his posse of moderators.

What has happened to JB7? I had been looking forward to am Irish Coffee in the Mournes …

I think like me Brian, a lot of the older members have drifted to other things….it happens….I still see a few of them on facebook…but also like me they’ll probably drift back eventually…

I think you need a clear out every so often..to allow for newer members to claim their space if ya will.

I for one find it nice to drop in here now and see a lot of new names..new ideas…along with a smattering of the oldies but goodies ;-)

It was the same when i first joined up…there were people from the first wave who had drifted away..but a lot of them eventually came back….and some drifted away again..and on it goes.

The main thing is..the site is still here and going strong as far as I can tell.

I’m even half tempted to do the Mournes trip again. Had such a good time last time I went :-)

After a few thousand posts giving the same”watch the horizon, crop a bit off the left, highlights blown, try this next time, HDR…eeugh, etc, etc” you soon get fed up doing it. It’s nice to pop in to see how people are doing, new & old, it gives inspiration to see what others are doing and especially the “I’m new here and just bought a camera” people who excel in a short time based on the support given here.
    And no rows!
JB still exists but I’d say you’d probably find him in the http://www.imademyownbigfeckoffcamera.com forum nowadays though. Last I heard of nfl he was still buying cameras and trying to “see what happens if you take this bit off this camera and put it on that camera and take a photograph”.

Ya JB still visits us here :).

But some time to time people get weary of posting, also of their hobby and all that.
I’ve not been 100% immune to it myself even :D

Facebook has had a negative impact on forums (I’ve check with some forum owners who concur, believe it or not lol).
Its taken some of the chat element away and to a certain extent photo sharing. The latter I don’t get tbh but thats just me.

Facebook will come and go, but PI will be here for eternity and beyond ;)

Remember where you heard it first folks. Maybe a catalyst for a T-shirt campaign similar to the bumper sticker campaign of a few years back, eh?

I’m still about, for a number of reasons I haven’t been on the internet that much. I had fully intended to get back to posting, although I wasn’t the most active member.

It can be hard to give c&c. I’m much more critical of my own work than when I started, but I don’t want to come across as overly negative, but what I like about PI is that it is not flickr “awesome shot”.

I shall try and drop in more. I took my first street snap yesterday after a 3 month break, mojo has been low.

Alessia (a PI person, I haven’t met her in person yet) is travelling through Tokyo in the near future, so there will be an unofficial PI meet here.

Could that be our first international PI meet?

I’ve met a couple from here who are definitely from a different planet.

Would that be an inter-stellar PI meet, an inter-planetary PI meet or just a general screw-up in gravity?

    Neither…just scary!

’tis an interesting question no doubt Brian.
Seems that the coming and going is a natural thing.
The site had been going a few years before I joined and many members with big
post counts were inactive even then.

Robbie, Alan, Mark and Martin have mentioned very valid reasons for the coming and going.
I just find the current economic goings on consuming loads of my energy and while I visit the
site every day the motivation to make meaningful contributions to threads is a lttle lacking.

The Facebook issue is also interesting.
I think PI is a brilliant site for photographers and I have received loads of helpful advice.
The answers given to other members queries are often very useful too.
I bought my camera from a fellow member through this site.

I joined FB a few months ago and have had loads of inquiries re purchasing my work.
While the “WOWWWWWWW” and “AAAAAAAWESOME” comments for even the most mundane of
images can be annoying and amusing we must remember that it isn’t a critique site and if FB
members think every image is a work of art so be it.

While the comments images receive on PI are more useful practically than those received on FB.
As most members of PI are photographers themselves is is unlikely that they will be offering to purchase any of my work.

I have found FB interesting with regard to what the members on there think of my photographs.

Anyway may I wish you all well and I look forward to interacting with you on PI for many years to come.

    Cheers,

    John.

I do still check in- but gave up posting for a while-
maybe to allow others to catch up-

Also, a lot of the people who joined when the site was still in its infancy had already left-
I was one of the last of that group.

As Alan said, posting becomes very repetitive-
and you begin to wonder if you’re simply restating your own prejudices anyway-

Recently, I’ve been spending more time designing cameras than photographing with them-
a new improved Plank is in the pipeline- in 6×7, 6×9, 4×5, and 5×7 sizes- and they’ll be for sale.
Featuring interchangeable focusing lens mounts, and tilt/shift/rise/fall mechanisms on the larger ones.
So hold off on buying that new digital, they just don’t have enough pixels…

BM, sorry, you might have to bring your own coffee to the Mournes, can’t make it this time-
Hope you all have a good trip, look forward to the pictures…

I’ll be back, will post pictures of the new cameras when they’re ready, if that’s ok…

Good to hear from you, JB. Coffee in teh Mournes just won’t be the same …

Looking forward to plank Mark 2, 3, 4, etc.

Next thing, you’ll be manufacturing the plates with a set-up grant from IDA.
