Merchant’s Arch Dublin

esthermolineParticipant
I love taking photos at the Merchant’s Arch in Dublin. Which one do you like best of these and why? The first two were taken with a compact camera, the last one with my Canon Digital Rebel XSi.

Street shots work best when people are interacting with people or environment.
But both the first and third suffer from the strong lighting, which is behind and makes the peoples’ faces unclear.
In 2 you have more balanced light in the photo, especially the near person is well lit. However in 2 you miss the shop signs which add a lot of the character of shots #1 and #3.A less bright (time of) day, might help your camera deal with the darkness of the tunnel, and pick out the faces of the people.
Slightly over-exposing in this situation might be another way around it.
This is a tough spot to do well in strong sunlight.Martin
esthermolineParticipantThat’s great Martin, thank you very much for the reply!! One problem I have is that I tend to go out at the same time every day for my photos as I have children and I have to do it while they’re in school, but I will try to get the next one at a weekend as late in the day as I can and see what happens! I’ll try the overexposure too. It is a bit of a difficult spot I guess, a dark tunnel like that, but I love the atmosphere of the place and there always seems to be interesting people going past, I’ll keep at it!
stevebMemberThere not bad, I suggest to keep at it. I love photographing it too, (I dont know how to post a pic but there is one in the dublin section of my site). try shooting at 5am with nobody going through it, I have done that and it looks surreal. try low down, try photographing as you walk through as speed, all will give interesting results. dont worry about the light too much, in fact its difficulty can be worked to your advantage. keep it up, and give us a look as they develop.
esthermolineParticipantHi Stephen, thanks a mil for your reply!! I’ll try to do all of those things except the getting there for 5am!! That would be a bit too much dedication to ask, specially considering I have children… But may be I will some day! I saw your photo of Merchant’s Arch, I must try a long exposure there the next time myself, I really like that type of effect. Also looked a bit at your other photos of Dublin, congratulations, I think they’re fantastic not just for themselves but for the themes you’re showing. I like particularly one of an old man on some steps with a stop racism poster. Good luck with your projects and thanks again for the tips!
stevebMemberThanks esthermoline, appreciate your kind comments. Keep us updated with your future Merchants Arch shots, its a really great place to shoot.
esthermolineParticipantesthermolineParticipantHere’s two more shots of Merchant’s Arch. Nothing much happening in them. The first one may be should be classed as landscape or architectural shot more than ‘street’ and the second one I just like its dreamy quality. What do you think?
