mf film scanning on epson 4180

    Hi Guys.

I’m scanning some B&W 120 film on my flatbed epson 4180. I’ve done it before (a while ago) and it was adequate. I seem to be getting a lot of interference patterns (Newton’s rings). I’ve tried the film in different orientations to no effect. I know I get this when I try and plave 5×4 film on the scanner (just for a quick look, not wanting to print it). Any ideas? I’m guessing that the film holder isn’t doing it’s job properly. These scanners usually have a pretty decent DoF, so I doubt that it’s the film height, but who knows?

    Help?

I could always take a shot of it with my digi cam :)

I presume you’ve tried it the wrong way around?
Emulsion down, so that it curls away from the glass?

Yes, thanks JB, I think the negs are a bit thin and the auto-gain is bringing out the interference more than I’d normally see. Time to buy some new chems methinks :) They weren’t important I just fancied shooting a roll last time out.

    All best

go do a hunt on ebay, you will find some film holders which are anti newtons rings type,

and they are not mad money

Newtons rings are caused by the negs touching the glass of the scanner. I usually put the negs into a book with some weight on it for a day and they’re nice and flat…or try scanning upside down as previously mentioned, and flipping back in PS.
