Exact same issue here – 400D too. Is this the effect of integrated cleaning system doing its job well I wonder? I was advised to not to mess with the mirror as the silver (?) coating on it ultra-thin, and to not to use any of the sensor cleaning systems to clean the mirror. In the end, I didn’t bother cleaning it as it doesn’t affect the picture quality!

If the dust is on the mirror, the first thing to do is try to get it off with a blower. There are a bunch of blowers on the market, but the best one is the Giotto Rocket – has a black bulb with a red nozzle. I find the integrated blower/brushes aren’t worth anything – the fibres tend to come off the brush part very easily and end up in awkward places.

Anyway, try dislodging the dust with the blower, and if that doesn’t work, try gently cleaning it with a lint-free cloth and a small amount of lens cleaning solution.

If the dust is on the focusing screen (mounted above the mirror at the roof of the chamber) it can be harder to dislodge.

As Positron says, the mirror is very delicate, so if it’s not too much of a problem, leave it be. Dust on the mirror or focusing screen is probably not a result of the integrated sensor cleaning system on the 400D – there is an adhesive strip around the sensor to catch the dust it shakes off.

    Hope that helps.

I have a Rocket Blower and will try it on my 400D camera but I can’t help notice what you said about the lint free cloth to gently remove dust from the mirror. Is it not better to avoid touching the mirror at all as it could adversely affect its position inside the camera? A shop assistant said something about this so it’s not really a statement but a question on the issue…

Generally, if the blower doesn’t shift the dust and it’s not interfering with the use of the camera, don’t touch it! The auto-focus systems work from the light bouncing from the mirror to the auto-focus sensors, so if you nudge the mirror, you’ll perturb your focussing system. The time when you might want to clean inside the body is for the sensor itself or the focussing screen, otherwise, leave well alone.

Are you sure its on your mirror? I agree that you shouldn’t touch it uness its interfering with your camera. The best way i find to remove dust us the following:
    1. Place camera facing down on a tripod
    2. Get the vacuum cleaner out and take all the nozzles off the bare hose
    3. Get a rocket blower or similar
    4. Switch off and remove lens
    5. Place vac hose near lens hold 1-2″ away, and blow into hole with rocket blower a few times
    6. Switch onto Sensor cleaning mode with 400D or whatever mode opens the sensor to clean with others and repeat.

This is great as you don’t have to touch anything and also the vac sucks away any dust thats dislodged, instead of it landing somewhere else.

I have done it a few times.

Can anybody tell me where the best place is to get a Giotto Rocket Blower in Dublin City?
