I’d agree that an evening dress and a bit more time would make for a better picture!
However, this was a completely impromptu shot. It was pouring down rain outside and she’d just come in (hence the anorak). I spotted her, went over to say hello and took the picture. The only convenient place to bounce the flash was off a large round pillar to my left, and hopefully it worked reasonably well.
Some random thoughts….. It seems personality has become more of a feature in competitions such as Miss World – for example, a previous Miss NI is now a presenter on the Blue Peter kid’s programme. That’s something I thought was immediately obvious with Catherine. In the few minutes we talked it was clear she was friendly, capable and intelligent (I’d fail miserably on all three counts, lol!). Certainly well suited to this role which I imagine involves a lot of pr work for companies, ‘appearances’ at various events, etc. She said she’d decided to take a year out from university after winning the title and was really enjoying the experience. Winning the title also means quite a lot publicity, which I suppose might possibly help open various career doors in future (for example, I noticed Catherine’s picture on the front page of one of the daily papers yesterday). That said, she mentioned she was fully intending to finish a veterinary medicine degree when her year as Miss NI comes to an end.
