misty morning

took this the other day on Ilford HP5, dev Ilfotech DDX 10mins 22 degrees. shot on Graflex Century Graphic, 105mm lens. 6x7cm neg.
any feedback?
A nice moody shot Isabella although I’ld be tempted to crop at least half, from the top of the image.
I think you needed a greater depth of field also, a little more detail in the trees would have helped the image
& finally, get a little lower to the ground. Don’t mind the weather!!!Isabella you have captured a lovely range of tones in your photo which reinforces the look of a misty morning. As John has already said I too might be tempted to crop off some of the top of your photo, but not half as he suggests. There is detail there to be seen.
The other thing I would suggest would be a more definite subject in the foreground which would add more interest to your photo. Perhaps more of that plant that has its leaves in the centre bottom of your picture.
Your development of the negative shows that you know a lot about exposure and processing to get the desired effect.That’s a very fine image, Isabella.

It just oozes atmosphere. Well done.There was definitely a shot to be had here isabella but this is not it. The composition is weak and cluttered and whilst i expect you wanted to catch the blinding brightness of the mist , the shot just feels way over exposed. Where was your focal point in this image?,. My eye just wanders around it with no discerable point of interest. I would have made it the shed and pulled in the leading line to it with DOF blowing out the clutter and possibly enhancing the mist effect.
I would strip this right back and consider your composition , then DOF and then exposure in that order
a little bit of cropping would do no harm, but i love the fact that my eye is hunting all over the image for the next point of interest :) love it :)
Could I just add that IMO this shot is in no way overexposed. If you placed a white border around your print you would clearly see the difference between base white and the mist.

in light of comments regarding the crop i have redone it going for a bit lower down. initially i had liked the way the blank space balanced the cluttered environment. i had also thought to keep the tip of the bamboo on the third line. however i do agree that this looks better.
re overexposure thanks Tex, the white border makes all the difference.
a brief not on the camera i use, it does not have a modern AF lens. it is more like a miniature large format camera. focusing is done on ground glass (image upside down) which is then replaced with a 120 back. focusing is done by moving the lens forward and back in relation to the film plane. these old lenses always give quite a different look and unless one is willing to use a magnifying glass, focus finder or measuring tape one must allow for a small amount of chance where that is concerned. i will endeavor to improve my aim though
looking at a shot like like this makes me want to shoot film again because the tones are wonderful but the composition is really just a shot of a back yard .

The tighter crop is a big improvement isabella. The composition feels much better balanced now.

The tree top right in the original and since cropped is enveloped and degraded not by the mist but by that overexposure> Just because its a notch or two above white does not mean its not overexposed
