Moon over watertower.

I don’t normally try to photograph the moon but I had received some messages from friends alerting me to the arrival of a super moon. They somehow felt that I should be out recording this marvellous phenomenon. I surmised that photographing it near the horizon with some recognisable landmark in the frame would give a nice sense of scale. Google led me to believe the moon would rise at approx 20.33 on Saturday. So at 20.15 armed with my trusty 40D, tripod and 80-300mm lens I travelled the short distance to the beach at Rosslare where I had a panoramic view of the sea from Curracloe to Rosslare Harbour.

Surely this moon would rise somewhere around here. It was windy, very cold and there was cloud low on the horizon. I was thinking of jacking it in when way to my left, over Rosslare Harbour, the aforementioned moon appeared, and it wasn’t hanging around.

I just about got this before it got too high to include stuff on the ground. It’s not the best photograph I’ve ever made but I kinda like it.

    Thanks for looking,

    John.

Another nice “supermoon” shot and although the foreground looks fairly blurry, like Jenny’s shot it really gives some perspective as to how large it was. Perhaps crop a little off the very top though? Not much though I’d say. I like the wisps of cloud as well.
Wish I’d known about this event beforehand but even at 3 in the morning it still looked great. Poor taxi driver driving me home thought I was some kind of stoner getting all excited, telling him I should be out with my camera
Apparently there are going to be a few more of these over the next year or two anyway so must sign up to Astronomy Ireland.

    Hi John.
Not a bad attempt at capturing the supermoon. Nice clarity of the moon itself, but perhaps a smaller aperture would have ensured the watertower etc would have been in focus. The moon is a deceptively fast moving subject & unless you are prepared to catch it as it rises over the horizon, it doesn’t take it long to get high in the sky. Maybe next time you will be setup & able to predict exactly where it will rise. I was tempted to capture it as it set, but at 04:30 am approx, sleep had priority.

Fair play to you, I didnt feel the calling myself.

Agree with what has been said, you need the foreground interest and unfortunatley its a bit soft… also she had risen a tad too high in the frame.

Have to add, I much prefer when there is some detail given about the photo as opposed to just being stuck up there with no comment at all by the poster. Puts it all in perspective and engages the viewer….. anyway, nuff said.

    Like.

Apparently this happens every year and the next time we can have a PI Perigee moon outing…..haha!
Put it in your diaries 23rd June 2013!!!

I think the water tower makes it look even bigger than the photo I took, well done
for getting out there and having a go.

For what it is John it is a lovely capture of the moon. You did very well to achieve such a composition and the water tower adds bundles to it. Ok it’s been said and of course you know about the blurry foreground, but under the circumstances you did very well.
I like your shot and wish I had gone out myself. I got it last year close up, but this out shines mine. [no pun intended]

    Thanks for the comments Mark.

I made some elementary mistakes which I hint at in the introduction.
    I’m glad I tried though.
I’d like to do it again but better.

I considered the early morning but……..

    Cheers,

    John.

The moon did move very rapidly.
There was cloud low on the horizon and I didn’t know where it was going to appear.
When it did show it was already almost to high.

The focus was, I think, a combination of shaking camera and wrong focus point.

My appetite has been whetted and I look forward to trying again.

    Cheers,

    John.

    Hi Jenny,

I appreciate you taking the time to comment.

Yeah I’m glad I went out and delighted that I was able to get a picture that had a sense of scale.
Now all I have to do is do the job right next time. :D

    Thanks,

    John.

    Thanks very much Pat.

I think there is a better image to be had here.
I need to know where the moon is to rise and have the composition sorted.
I need to shelter the camera in the event of wind.
I need to focus properly so the image is sharp.

    I look forward to part 2. :D

Yes John, I also look forward to part 2. You certainly have the makings of a fine shot here when it comes around again. My problem was also not knowing where the moon would rise, so it was a bit of mad dash when it did. I had a quick look on google but I still couldn’t find where it was rising. I did enjoy the experience of watching the moon rise so quickly and quietly cursing the clouds as they rolled in.

difficult enough subject to shoot John – in my experience.

    pity about the blurry bits.

    good start though

    Good afternoon Sir,

‘Tis nice to hear from you and I appreciate your comments.

I think all the common mistakes a photographer can make were made here but we live and learn…..I hope….on both counts. :D

    Thanks again,

    John.
