Never been to something like this before, caught the last 3 junior races

Never deleted so many badly focused shots either

If “Attempted Panning” was an Olympic event I’d be a Gold medal cert

    #1 – 1/40th sec – F20 – ISO100 – 35mm

    #2 – 1/60th sec – F14 – ISO100 – 20mm

    #3 – 1/100th sec – F13 – ISO100 – 70mm

    #4 – 1/80th sec – F13 – ISO100 – 33mm

    #5 – 1/800th sec – F4.5 – ISO100 – 100mm

    #6 – 1/800th sec – F5.0 – ISO100 – 105mm

    #7 – 1/320th sec – F8.0 – ISO100 – 28mm

Great effort for first time John. All good shots. Pin sharp. Makes a nice change, the ol’ sports stuff.

Panning is difficult. To come up with a collection no matter what was left on the developing room floor is commendable. But the first stands out for me. No distractions in the background and super sharp. If you could mellow the near post and this is, as I said on Flickr, the best panning I’ve seen.

It takes a fair while to adjust to the speed and dust and usually changing weather with these kind of events.

Have only done it once myself…in Gormanstown, Co. Meath, and it took me the best part of an hour before I figured out the right setting/lens for the job.

like yourself…a lot of deleted shots at the beginning. But once you get it right..there are some great shots to be had.

Well done John, I’m sure you’ll be back for seconds

Thanks for the feedback peeps. Considering it was a first timer for me I was reasonably happy with the day’s catch. Trashing blurred motorbikes is a lot more satisfying than trashing blown skies.

I tell ya what… between the panning, the chimping and the dusting off I must have been a comedy to watch… “pan, chimp, dust, pan, chimp, dust, pan, chimp, dust”.

I’m finding it quite difficult to form an opinion about these-
they’re all quite small, the panning ones,
and the bikes are smaller again-

I do like to see the bikes occupying more of the frame though-
the dust does look like a nightmare though-

Sorry jb… given I was posting 7 images I opted to posted slight smaller versions for the sake of keeping the size down for anyone with a slower connection.

It was Junior Moto-X so the bikes would have been a lot smaller than the standard adult models.

Here is #1 at 800 pixels. Unfortunatley dealing with distractions such as ropes, poles etc. was the trickiest element of the afternoon. This one is slightly spoiled by a plastic white stake.

Great first effort I’d say, well done.

I like no.1, but the best shot for me is the second… There is a lot going on, great light, love the wee bit of flare on the front wheel
and the dust from the back tyre. Good angle (helped by the marshalls) and the shadow if fantastic!

Not normally something I would even look at but I think it’s (no.2) by far the best shot.

Would like to see it bigger though.

First for me too John, the pick of the bunch. Have you considered
a square crop, keeping fairly tight to the rear wheel of the bike to
give the rider some space to ride into? Really good first attempt.
Never tried it myself, but I can imagine some of the difficulties…

I tell ya what Cathal for me it was a pure trial and error effort.

For the most part I was using the Canon 40D Kit lens which is a 17-85mm IS USM and I shot in both Shutter Priority and Aperture Priority mode. I did switch to a Canon 28-105mm USM for a few closer in shots.

The key here is shutter speed.. I think.. for the panning lark it was somewhere between 1/40th and 1/100th of a second. But it was all luck as far as I was concerned.

What I’ll do is I’ll add in the shot settings for all 7 shots in the next few mins.

It ain’t easy! I was trying today between 1/30th & 160th sec but I got none, nil, zilch, empty, should-have-stayed-at-home amount from panning. There’s always next time.

Pity I didn’t meet anyone else up there – I met lousy when I was on my way out and didn’t realise wexkel11 was there too. Next time!

    Cracking set John.
Never tried one of these events but you wetted the appetite.
Like the 3 and 4th shots most.

Good panning for the slow shutter speeds, i read an article yesterday that states that you shoulf start around 160 and then slow the shutter as you get the hang of the shooting.
