Just really fun and wonderful stuff…so glad you shared these!
Love them..well done!
Noely FParticipantWorld class! An absolutely superb study of birds in flight, worthy of any wildlife publication….my compliments
MikkaParticipantnfl-fanParticipantJust curious… was synch speed between the flash and shutter an issue with these at all?
Would love to know some more about the technical details, no Exif.
Thanks
vividimagesMemberHi there, first of i must say i didnt expect the amount of feedback these have recieved. Thanks to all that have commented.
Nfl synch speed can be a problem.
What I have done was place the flash about 2ft from where I reckon the birds flight path is, camera is set at 1/250th and flash on low power about 1/8th – 1/32nd is what is required for the fast flash duration. No different than catching water drops really, same principal.
If you set apeture to about f10 you will only be exposing for the flash which makes things alot easier but will give black or very dark backgrounds. To light the backgrounds will require another flash just for that purpose, not got this bit done yet, but I think it should be easy to sort.
Im shooting in full manual mode no af no ttl etc, af would never keep up with these, so its a matter of prefocus timming and praying.
Hope this answers some questions, im not the best at explaining these things on paper im more a hands on location type of person.

jb7ParticipantThat second one there is great,
real picture book stuff-Hope they go in the book, btw-

nfl-fanParticipantSo… if I’m thinking correctly these were shot at 1/250th using the flash to freeze the motion? I’d have never thought it was possible at such a slower shutter speed.
Once again, fantastic work and very well done.
Mr.HParticipantAbsolutely amazing shots Gareth… congratulations. I can see the second one winning many a competition.

the flash doesnt actually last as long as 250th and thats what freezes the motion from my understanding
BrickeeParticipantsnaphappyMembergonna stick my oar in too and repeat whats been said above stunning work
John GriffinParticipantGreat work, just one thing though. The backgrounds are a little distracting and look un-natural with the lines. I would suggest making the background completely black with no detail what so ever. I feel this would make the images much cleaner, they would be perfect then in my eyes. I love no.3!!!
