Mother and Daughter

I’d like to do a series of portraits featuring Mothers and their Daughters. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for quite a while. This was my first, albeit fairly casual attempt. Would appreciate any comments..especially regarding whether or not the subjects and the composition would work as part of a set.

8)its a great idea, but remember your basics, clear background, and the hand cropped off on the left is distracting too.
I dont know whether trying to get them with the same expression would help too?
Cheers SM…good points. It wasn’t a formal sitting or anything..just taken at a party…and I did consider taking out the back of the chair…but decided against in the end.
I’m still trying to decide whether I want to do this informally or do proper studio type shots…I do want to get a more relaxed kind of shot..so not sure doing it studio style will work.
But you’re right..basics are basics no matter where the shoot :D
You could have some fun with these two if it was a formal setting. I bet
a clever make-up artist could make them look like sisters, if not twins.
I get the impression you’re standing and they’re sitting, which isn’t
great, but the light looks controlled and the skin tones have come
out well in your conversion.The daughter looks like a natural photographic model.
Thanks Pete. I agree about the daughter..she has a naturalness in front of the camera that I think comes through.
I did try a few other Mother/Daughter shots that evening (it was a Debs thing..so lots of them ;-)) but none of them seemed to relax the same way. I would have liked to have spent a bit longer with these two, but it might have looked bad on the others..hehe!!
It’s funny really… some of the girls I photographed were fine on their own or with their friends…but the minute they sat with their Mothers…bang!! they were sitting straight..looking slightly edgy…waiting for the flash so they could get away kinda thing..
Not sure what that says really..but there ya have it ..I guess I’ll have to choose carefully.. :wink:
May as well stick this shot in here…it’s actually all the women on one side of the family in one group…all Mothers, Sisters and Daughters.
Last photo is good from a composition point of view, bit sharper would be better again too, also an earlier poster said they should have the same expression to improve the pic? I would totally disagree with that, they are their own persons, if you want one of those pics you go to the Photographer with the studio shop and get them wearing identical dress suits and navy sailor hats. :rolleyes:

I think informally would be the way to go, studio shots are great but I think people pretend a bit in studio situations so if it’s more relaxed your looking for I think informal would be better. It’s a really cool idea, my advice would be don’t just limit yourself to headshots… Think outside the box a little?

It was a possible option for the OP to consider if he wanted to go again with the shoot, I don’t kow if it would help or not, which is why I said I dont know. If it were my shoot, I’d try it, try to make a “mirror image of age” image going on, but thats not a definite, it might well not work.

Jesus this site has some morons.I think its great idea .. I really like the first one .. I think the white of the cardigan on mum is messing up your contrast – the lighting looks too flat as a result
You might remembers I started a project like this with friends last year – a series of headshots of “realwomen” – unfortunatley I had a technical disaster and lost 3 months of images and I have only two left to show you – I posted them here somewhere but you might remember the first one I did was a selfportrait
Anyway – I learned alot with that project about getting people to relax – .. I found wine helped :)L

Actually Lorraine I certainly do remember that shoot of yours…it was ever since I saw it that I thought about doing this…but of course I am the worlds greatest procrastinator…so here I am still talking about it over a year later ;-)
