Roy – I love that shot of the father and baby! Great lighting and very effective. However I’d like the area directly above the baby’s head to be more uniform black – the lighter ‘glow’ around the head doesn’t seem quite right (and in the small triangle where the father’s chin is close to the baby’s ear). But the expressions and overall look are top notch!
Also appreciate the explanation about shadows – something to keep in mind in future.
byrne5012 – Yes it’s possible to ‘recover’ pictures that have been significantly under exposed, but, honestly, it’s much better to check your pictures and make the adjustments when taking them. Especially in a case where you are taking 200 pictures, check and make the adjustments after the first one and the rest should be fairly close. That’s a big advantage of digital – you can review your shots and don’t need to guess! Having to push the exposure afterwards by anything more than one stop in photoshop or whatever will usually introduce a lot of noise and general reduction in quality.
That said, I do like the expressions in this shot of a mother and daughter. The thing that appeals most is the way the daughter is looking intently into the camera while the mother has her eyes partially closed and appears to be thinking of something else. Don’t know exactly why, but this works for me!

Thanks Cliff – I couldn’t understand what you meant about the lighter glow around the head. Then I looked at it on another monitor. My monitor is matched to a particular art paper which like many art papers tends to have less shadow detail than normal – so images look the way they’ll print on my screen. Put them onto the internet and with a normal screen they look lighter, which can show up CS work which would not be on the print.
That’s my excuse – and I’m sticking to it!!!!!
Cheers
RoyGrahamBParticipantFolks,
can I just say first of all thanks for all the comments and excellent edits.
I think what Roy is doing is taking a photograph and turning it into something different
from the original. I think where Robbie is coming from is what point after editing does a photo
stop being a photo but an entirely new creation. To be honest I have had a look at Roys website and some of the pictures to me are less photos
but more pieces of art.Personally I can appreiciate both sides of the conversation. I enjoy photography in it’s most basic form where
the images are just an unmodified capture of a moment in time. However I love some of the work similar to Roys where
photography becomes an entirely new art form and takes on a unique life of it’s ownAgain, I really appreiciate the comments and edits.
If I have to be honest though and well I always am then I reckon Ross’s edit wins the
prize in my book.Graham
Oh and comment away Robbie no one is coming after anyone

RoyWell I’m afraid I don’t have a calibrated monitor so maybe it’s just me, lol :)
Glow aside, it’s still a cracking shot. Love the way the baby is cocooned in the dad’s arms.
