motorway by night

these are essentially tests for film. the motorway severs the landscape, essentially truncating the land i once associated with the house i live in. where once you could walk for miles through the bog now you can get about 100 metros and you have to walk miles to get around it…
shoot 1 – 30 second exposures from a variety of distances to the road. as it was quite late apertures are around f6.3, ISO 100.

Im Sorry, but these defo aint up my street ! way too dark with very little detail.

i liked the simplicity of the colors and lines of the cars, have been re-shooting a little earlier though to get some detail in the landscape. also awaiting a 60GN flashgun to try get some foreground detail…
i have some shots in full daylight but the road is far less dramatic…
Its a long time since I shot with film…you say that this is a test, can you explain?
I notice less noise in the final image…
ISO 100 is too fast for this light
maybe get to a flyover and get red and white streaming lights both sides with a long exposure…Hello Isabella. Long exposures can get some really interesting results and working with film means we’re not too sure what we got. I’ve seen some excellent results that included the use of a handheld flash. You can fire it several times in different places.
Like everything else we shoot getting some interest going in the frame is a challenge. So maybe you’ll try your technique again and get another subject or two that create more interest? Digital is great too because we get results straight away.

mike these are tests because film is expensive and i only get 9 shots per roll rather than waste it on dozens of shoots with no results i’d rather figure out where i want to shoot from before taking it. so this is the first of a series of digital shoots. at least if i can get the composition and the time of day vaguely right i can leave the worry with film down to reciprocity failure and absence of traffic!
my digital SLR is nearly 6 years old, only does 100 – 1600 and much noisier than newer counterparts that I’ve seen. not helped by bringing the sliders way up on the shadows and highlights in RAW processing… the film i will eventually use is Velvia 50 (color trans) , prob way too slow and some 400 Ilford (B+W neg)
there are no flyovers for miles! thats part of why I’m taking these images, they’re part of a larger project based on the area i grew up in which this motorway has cut off…

Undercrank yes in the past I’ve used hand held flash to great effect, I’ve finally bought one online (Metz 60CT) as i think it would make a massive difference. image 1 has a tiny bit of fg as supplied by the paltry on camera flash. needless to say there isn’t one on the film camera! thanks for the links, some beautiful images there. maybe with the digi i should also use a remote shutter release on the bulb setting….

a couple of things that i feel might improve the images going forward
You possible need to shoot a little earlier in the evening, enough to get
detail in the foreground and sky.i think the focal length of the lens used is a tad too wide/short. the details of
the lights in the distance are a little lost in the scene.potential there for a really interesting project.it would be good to shot maybe a bit earlier to get some detail out of the foreground and sky, i think defintly move a bit closer to the road it self. also if you didnt want to shot any earlier you could always try bulb mode. i done a project at night before and found bulb to be a great help. reciprocity failure was a nightmare to figure out as well, light was different every night i went out.
just my own thoughts on it, i think some nice typical landscape images framed with the motorway running across the frame could look great, if its about the motorway cutting the landscape then some beautiful landscape shots with the red and white streak cutting through it could really drive your point home. just my two cents though,best of luck with the project
thanks for the advice guys, ill try to address some of these issues in the next shoot!
I’m quite enjoying them so i think it’ll be a long series especially as the time per shoot is so limited.
