Movie Recommendation – Gran Torino
-
nfl-fanParticipant
Thinking about renting a movie?
Well I’d highly recommend Clint Eastwood’s latest (and supposedly last) ‘Gran Torino’.
Without giving anything away I really enjoyed this film. The story was simple but very enjoyable. Clint (we’re on a first names basis) played the usual mean n’ grumpy sorta character and was absolutely brilliant… he made me laugh all the way through the film with his blunt and abbrasive one liners.
Thoroughly enjoyed this flick… best film I’ve seen in a while. Available to rent now…
J
nfl-fanParticipantI also watched ‘The Wrestler’ recently.
Whilst this was highly acclaimed by the critics I found the film a bit lacking.
T’was a simple story… but it seemed to lack some sort of depth.
Mickey Rourke was very, very good in the role of Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson… a very likeable character, couldn’t have been better casted in my opinion, played very well by Rourke.
As a bit of a wrestling fan from my teens years and having read quite a few wrestler biographies the story was very believable but it just didn’t suck me in the way I had hoped.
I’d really enjoyed Mickey Rourke in this movie… just a shame the story was so light. Alright if you were stuck… but I’d I only score it around 6/10 overall.
bingbongbiddleyParticipantPersonally I’d prefer the Wrestler to Gran Torino. I liked both but the Wrestler had more lasting appeal and a lot of depth in my opinion. I thought Gran Torino was a little simplistic and it was ridiculous the way a lot of Clint Eastwood’s lines were just snarls. Was he playing a rottweiler or something?
I enjoyed Gran Torino a lot but then I thought afterwards that some of it was a bit basic.
I think they’re both worth seeing though.
PEACE OUT!
justaguyParticipantNot his best movie, but its Clint afterall so always good enough.
personally I think “Unforgiven” was his bestnfl-fanParticipantEven though Gran Torino wasn’t really meant as a comedy I couldn’t help but see the comedic value in some of Clint’s snarls and rough one liners… I just loved the honesty of everything he had to say, especially some of his initial conversations with the priest… it’s not often you get that sort of dry wit from Americans.

Definitely agree – Eastwood is a giant of the movies, and the main reason for this is that his character (and most of his parts are a variation on the one character) evokes either
admiration, in the form of his honesty (remember, “go ahead, make my day” who didn’t wish that he pulled the trigger) or his downright basic humanity (Unforgiven is a great example of that). He also has a talent for direction, which is reported to be due to the same quality – honesty…..and I could go on!
Suffice to say, that Eastwood is a REAL character, totally credible, which is what all of the mega stars were, and Gran Torino is the most recent example of his talent!
5faytheParticipantHi John,
Coincidentally we watched Gran Torinino on Saturday night.
We both really enjoyed it.
It reminded me a bit of many of Clint’s films where he is initially
reluctant to get involved while the bad guys ride roughshod over
the good guys.In reality, I suppose, it is a little black and white with regard to who the
bad and good guys are, the denouement is a little “strange” (I know there
is a better word to describe it) but this didn’t take away from what I found
to be an enjoyable tale of the triumph of good over evil with a few laughs
thrown in along the way.I would recommend it too but like a lot of other things it depends
on a persons own preferences whether they would concur.Cheers,
John.
nfl-fanParticipantGoing to watch “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” tonight. Will write a few lines in the morn.

I hear you will need at least 2 bowls of popcorn – it’s very long!

Ya… 2.5 hours I think… staying awake will be the hardest bit.
C’mon John, wakey wakey, should I spend the time watching it? :D
nfl-fanParticipantMorning…
Well I watched “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” last night… hard film to sum up in just a few words… personally I enjoyed it. I liked it but it’s not the sort of film that I would rant about… but I think that the film was designed to be one you simply just like and not rant about anyway.
Not sure whether it was a love story, a general life sort of story or whether the story was specific to the “curious case”… a bit of all 3 I suppose.
As I said… a hard one to sum up… I liked it… but I think you’ll have to watch it and make your own mind up.
