A couple of the characters at the event. Not really my usual cup of tea but I thought I’d try.

Well I didn’t expect the floodgates of critiquedom to open but this is a very muted response altogether.
Can never figure out how some posts get so many replies and others that often warrant more comment/criticism are ignored. Anyway, for what it’s worth, here’s my tuppence worth.
Firstly I think these shots are more suited to the “People” forum as the main focus of attention in all shots is people with very little evidence of what’s going on being apparent. A perfect example of this would be a posting titled “Look before you leap” by 5faythe in this forum also. If you are taking documentary photos of a threshing event, I feel it would help to include more of the machinery and surroundings, putting everything into context. As it is, these guys could be operating anything from a crane to an old printing press – I know that’s stretching it but hopefully you know what I mean.
Anyway, the shots themselves – I like them! Good expressions in all of them with no posing or eye contact, making for good candids and Black & White was probably the right option, giving them almost a timeless quality. Possibly a touch of flash would’ve helped #3 and #4 ? Love the concentration on the face of #1 (kind of reminds me of my late dad :) )
Hope someone else feels they can add comment to these.Mark
they are all a bit grey and flat to me, i think they need a contrast boost. sky is blown out in 1 or 2 of em aswell. they dont really appeal to me as being a documentary – they are just a series of informal portraits really.

well documentary takes time to get a feel for it. they are a bit flat as mentioned. next time pull back a bit more, give context. but nice set just the same.
i think for a type of photography you were not used to or
not fully comfortable you made a really nice job.I think #1 is the winner of the bunch for me.
The contrast in the images is good and the snaps are good
but they dont convey ‘steam threshing’ they are more
concentrated on the people rather than on the machines or what
they are doing, so a wider view rather than the close shooting
you used might have been better.Really nice images all the same
