A shot of the brother in law for his folio.
Taken in the living room with a strobe and brolly.
Converted to mono.
I can see alot of people going yuck at the muscles including me, but it would be nice if they can see past that and look at it from a lighting point.
Also a change from my normal macro shots.
Cheers Gareth
Shot with a brolly and a LARGE amount of photoshopping :) I have two issues with the lighting. The first is the fact that model is not grounded, he’s floating in space, so it’s a little bit disorienting to look at the image. It also looks unnatural to me because I would expect some drop off from the light, where here it appears too even. I guess all in all it’s over cooked in photoshop. This would look really good on a poster where there is text etc. but as a stand alone photo it doesn’t work for me. As for contrast, it’s a high contrast image but too compressed, I’d rather see a wider range of tones. As it is now there are a few greys and black, I kind of miss all the other tones.
Well exposed, good and sharp, but the processing and lighting are too unnatural for me. You might also consider a composition which is less static and central.
I get what Ciaran is saying, but I think for someone’s portfolio, you’re not after interesting compositions etc. you just want a picture showing how muscular the guy is, so I’d say he’s fairly happy with this.
What did you use for a background here? IS he just cropped onto a black background in photoshop or is the background actually real?
