Sheryl Crow
I thought you were a serious musician…
Oh but I am, I am most certainly…
Yet for reasons that mere mortals (non musicians) couldn’t possibly
fathom I’m currently listening quite attentively to the soundtrack of
that 1930’s masterpiece The Wonderful Wizard of Oz..Go figure…
Rob
Mick451ParticipantaoluainParticipantI have actuallt just started listening to Jazz, starting off with Dave Brubeck, takes a bit to
get used to the changes in each track and the complex rythems . . .once you get in on it its brilliant, classical could be the same . . .
Alan RossiterParticipantWell, seeing as we’re making lists…
Vangelis, Jean Michele Jarre, Frankie, Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, Devotchka, Enya, Dido, Joan Armatrading. Not an exclusive list just the memorable collections that I have.
Alan.

Tom Waits, Stevie Wonder, John Martyn, Nat King Cole, Steely Dan (as long as Walter Becker
sticks to bass and never picks up a guitar again!), Norah Jones, Beethoven (beats the pants of Mozart!), Arlo Guthrie,
Captain Beefheart, Bach, Tony Bennett, Sheryl Crow (what she’s doing now), Chet Atkins, James Taylor, Chick Corea,
Michel Camilo, Paul Carrack, Diana Krall, Michael McDonald…
Basically, musicians who know music and can adapt, can play anything and own it.
Can’t stand one-trick ponies. It shows conceitedness and a distinct lack of ambition…Rob.
John Martyn died today. I was sure someone else mentioned him here, but I can’t find the thread.
Was very sad to hear that this morning, but not surprised. I saw him play in Vicar street about a month or two ago and he was in a desperate state. He could barely play his guitar and when he spoke it was almost impossible to understand him. His usually silky voice was raspy and hoarse when he sang. He must have weighed about 30 stone and was in a wheelchair. The only thing that saved the gig from total farce was his fantastic band who were wonderful musicians to the man.
I saw him previously about a year before at the same venue and I was totally shocked at the deterioration in such a short time. That time he walked on stage with a cane (He had a leg amputated a few years ago) and was witty and played and sang brilliantly.
I was very sad when he left the stage the last night and I thought then that I would never see him play again.
Thankfully he has left behind a wonderful back catalogue of music
A really sad loss to music, one of the last great troubadours with a voice like velvet.
May your music never end John.
:(
ExpresbroParticipantand as far as music I like to listen to is concerned…well..
The Beatles, The Stones, Cream, Led Zep, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, John Martyn, James Taylor, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley, Elvis Costello, Free, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker..basically anything Chess Records related, Johnny Cash, Nanci Griffith, Emmylou Harris, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, The Specials, Madness, The Jam, Paul Weller, Joy Division, The Buzzcocks, The Clash, Bob Marley, …I could go on…honestly..I could..
More currently the one band that really do it for me is Radiohead..I’m not too sure about the current crop of so called “punk” bands…they seem a little tame to me.
I like some electronic music and even quite a bit of club music..but I just don’t get Rap and Gangsta music..especially after seeing Coolio on BB ..the guy cannot sing and cannot play any instrument and yet he is a major recording artist….Hmmm. I do like classical and prefer Mozart if I’m choosing.
Basically I love music with feeling.
Basically I love music!!

A touching tribute to a great musician.

Just as well I’m not travelling to the Mourne Mountains in your car with the radio on.

MikkaParticipantRory Gallagher, Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Deep Purple, Led Zep, Thin Lizzy, Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, various Metal new and old………..Mikka
AndyLParticipantOh flip, lots of stuff, from most genres.
Soundgarden, Sugababes (ok, only really push the button), Roni Size, Leftfield, Metallica, Cj Bolland, Stone roses, Hendrix, Nine inch Nails, Norah Jones, Guy Clarke, John B, Prodigy, The Police (not sting though), a lot of dance music (some cheese, some hard as nails), Zero7, classical stuff, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Chemical Brothers, REM, and so on.
Only stuff I cannot stand is the brand of country and western that is widely touted as “entertainment” in many pubs in Northern Ireland. Country roads do indeed tend to take me home!

With you on that one Andy. I think The Police were one of the finest bands to emerge in the late 70’s early 80’s, but apart from his first debut LP Sting is in there with Phil Collins.
Coffee Table music.
