Can someone recommend a color for muslin background that will be used for portraits? white or black or some other color like blue

Grey is a good choice Blade … that way you can fire a flash onto it, turning it white, or you can underexpose it, turning it nearly black, you also have the option of gelling your flash on the backdrop to create coloured backgrounds …

    just my opinion anywho…

Kind of depends on what you’re planning to do with the portraits and what sort of lights you have.

A white background can be photographed as grey (http://www.thewonderoflight.com/galleries/d/296-2/cwhyte_080203_0021_small.jpg) or indeed pure black, if you stop lighting falling on it. Similarly you can turn a completely black background white, if you shine light on it.

Colours introduce the difficulty of ensuring your subjects clothing, makeup and styling don’t clash with what colour background you use. My recommendation would be a neutral grey which gives you a huge amount of flexibility and is neutral, so shouldn’t detract attention from the subject.
