My beloved Nikon FE is sick.

i’m not sure if this is the correct forum for this, i know there’s equipment forums further down but i’ts a bit of a ghost town that far down
My FE, which has, up until this week, worked flawlessly for 30 odd years (6 of them in my hands) has suddenly developed a meter problem. i’ve changed the batteries and now when turned on the needle will shoot up as normal before slowly falling back to the bottom. changing aperture or shutter speed has no effect on it, it will stay at the bottom. however if i turn it off and on again, it will shoot up for a few seconds again and then give up again :?

i’m not sure if the metering in all old Nikons is the same, but anybody have similar problems with metering? is it fixable?

    Niall.

if the battery contacts are all clean and the new batteries ARE good (that is not guaranteed) sounds like a failed capacitor, or such in the camera’s lightmeter. A replacement board can be found e.g. here:

Since s/h FEs are cheap it’d be more economical to shoot in Manual mode and get yourself a 2nd body.
