Great shots, especially the first one – what car is that? Looks brilliant!

PS: I have had absolutely no luck with panning – Is there any technique other than just good eye/hand coordination practice?

E type Jag. A gorgeous classic and a lovely photo of it.
    Well done.

Superb shots, expecially the Jag, one of my all time favourite
motors. Haven’t had much luck with panning myself so any tips
you’d like to share would be most welcome ;)

Thanks for the comments,i’m really made up.In all i took about 200 pics.there are alot of good ones, but these are my favourites.

I started of with the shutter speed to high”about 400 i think.” The pics were to clear ,including background.

So i ended up at about 160 or 200 with most of the pics on shutter priority.I also went half way up the drag strip, and stood well back so i could get a good view of the cars coming up the strip.
All i did then was pan the cars from the start line all the way up till they aere paralell with me,then start shooting on continous mode.

I also found that i had to up the ISO with some of the shoots, because it said low in the view finder.

You also need a good mono pod,as i tried a few with just my hand, and they were not that good.

Thats all i think.I suppose just practice.

I think i got lucky with the settings on the first day.

If you play about with settings and pan all the way when clicking and follow through”like a golf shot”.you should get it.

On the other hand”IF I CAN DO IT,ANY BODY CAN”.

not a bad first attempt. Next learn to move the cars to the top or bottom of the frame, when they’re center frame as you have done, it doesn’t look great. It’s easier to handhold and pan rather than have it on a monopod…takes a bit of practice, but trust me, it’s way easier to handhold.

Very good first attempt really like the first and last and have to agree with Mark with some practice
it would be better to hand hold.

Thanks for the tips mark,as you say practice is needed.Because when i hand held they were not as sharp and darker.

I should have replied here first Sean. 3 great results but you know my thoughts on the crop you suggested elsewhere. It’s great when it works, init?

That may be practise and also your kit…. but I’m not sure wat you are using.

If you have image stablization in the camera/lens that will help with both the sharpness and darkness. Or using a faster lens would allow some further compensation for the handheld induced problems. Of course the main thing is practise.

Personally I don’t think I’d be able to do hand-held shots with any telephoto lens that’s f4 or better, too heavy for me to hold steady.

They are lovely shots though, very well done.

Thank’s for the comment’s.I think i will give the hand held a go,as my lense is a nikkor 135-300,and its not that bad,
But i do understand that with the big lenses,it would be almost impossible.

You’ll be able to pan with any lens once you get used to panning….I’ve panned with 500mm & 600mm lenses and it has to be done handheld, it’s something you get used to. Generally when you pan you’re shooting at something like 1/250 at F8 or slower, so your f-stop is always small which gives good latitude for sharpness. Pre-focusing works best, and for something like formula 1 is fine, because all the drivers take the same line again and again. I’m pretty sure these boys would not be taking the same line, so could be difficult. Image stabiliser lenses don’t help with panning, as much as they ‘have’ a pan function…it’s next to useless. Practice (again) and a steady hand is what will nail the shot for you….and take loads and loads! I wouldn’t think of shooting at 1/60 or slower until I can nail the shot at 1/250 or 1/125.
