MY first holga 120 pics !

    HI all,

Here are some of the results from my first roll put through the holga 120.

I made a kind of mistake . . . I didnt black out the number window on the back door . . .
    %$^&$%^&*^&%^&*(&%^$.
I had 2 strips of black tape over it, not enough.

these are 100% unprocessed, i think the lens suffers from a tiny bit of
    pincussion distortion

anyway here we go with the first 3.

    Very good-

    I like that second one-

    Lots of distortion alright,
not actually the lens, but the position of the iris, behind it-
not that that’s any consolation to you…

I can’t see any evidence of the window-
maybe you didn’t post those pix…

How do you count the frames without it?
or do you have to fashion a replaceable flap,
like the one that was on the Holga I borrowed once…

    Good start Alan…

It’s hard to tell if the focus is off on the first or if it’s movement, did you shoot on bulb by any chance?
    I’ve made that mistake a few times…

I like the second, for some reason it reminds me of those pictures of rows of deck chairs at the beach.
    Nice reflections on the third.

Did you cover all of the back? Or just the window?
    What film did you use?

    Thanks Guys,

Ok, the first was shot from the van I was driving in traffic about 5mph! camera shake!

the fogging you can see in #’s 2&3 centre frame.

I just stuck the focus on MOUNTAIN.

I taped up the inside around the WINDOW behind the shutter, kind of flocked the 6×6
mask and taped up the seam all around the door when the film was loaded, and of course
the window. I made some other mods but there a bit too finicky to explain in words, its late!!

I used Fuji 220 ISO400 so got 24 shots! I wound the film until I came across the start marker
and taped up the window and for each frame counted 34 CLICKS which was actually a bit too much
for the second 12 frames as the circumference of the take up roll was greater, so should be able
to get about 26 frames out of a 220 roll.

I’ll post some more tomorrow, I think I can salvage about 4 or 5 more, I will also post
some of the really fogged ones too.

I kind of like them to be honest, very different, dont know whether the pincushion thing is
going to annoy me or whether its a NICE effect . . .

    thanks again sinead and joseph

I like that second one too Alan.

I don’t know if it’s neccesary to go to all that bother taping and whatnot anymore on the Holgas. I didn’t tape mine and didn’t have any major light leaks. I did stick a small square of cardboard to a piece of black insulating tape and stuck this over the window in such a way that I can remove it to see the frame numbers in between shots. I think that whole counting the clicks thing only really applies when you use 35mm film in a Holga 120.

Anyway..congrats on joining the dodgy photography club. Will see you next weekend no doubt :-)

Thanks Robbie, yea ill be there.

I used 220 film and there is no paper backing on it, but I hear what your saying.

I have some 120 colour film ISO160 I wonder would that be too slow for the holga?

    Here are some more images.

    I found a way around the fogging below . . .
Converted the colour image through PS with a green filter.

 Sorry for all tha images, just value your opinions . ..

I like that conversion of the barn with the tyre-
looks like a good picture in its own right-

If your workflow is predominantly digital there’s good reason to shoot colour,
    as you’ve found out-
you can do your conversions as usual,
allowing you to choose your filtration in post-

Some of these pictures seem to have less distortion than others,
do you have a choice of aperture?

Shooting wide open might produce less distortion…

    Thanks Joseph,

Yea there is an aperture selection of 2, cloudy or sunny!

and as far as I can see there is no difference between the two.
There seems to be a circular disc behind the lens with a square
hole in which is bigger than opening at the back of the lens !

I cant have a good look as Im writing this, I have another rool of film in :)

Yea i think i will be shooting colour mostly as I can convert to mono
    on the comp.

    thanks again
