I don’t know what others might say, but I really like these, particularly the second shot with
those shadows from his fingers. First shot crop is perhaps a little too tight for my personal
taste but that doesn’t stop me liking it a lot.
Fantastic dof and colour. If these are really your first portraits, then some of our more experienced
portrait photographers had better watch out. If, on the other hand, you’re lying, then we may just have
    to have you painlessly destroyed.
    Well done absolon

I bought a Nikkor 50/1.4 today and had to try it. Well, these are my first real portraits, which are made to be portraits. I took pictures of people before, but this is the first time I have the proper equipment and can separate a face from the background (unlike with the p&s which i used before). It was a half lie then .. come on, crucify me :)

That 50mm is a super lens by the way – borrowed one a few times … sweeeeet :D

Anyway … back to these. colours are great, DoF is nice (that lens is superb for that ) but there are two main niggles i have … cropping the chin and second there is no eye contact.. the second is better ‘cos the cigar gives a bit of narrative but would be better IMO if you had some eyeball action going on there..

    Hope that hurts enough ;)
