My New Dome Hide & Male Chaffinch

I recently bought a “standard” sized dome hide from Wildlife Watching Supplies in the UK. It arrived last week. I tried it out for the first time yesterday. It comes in a decent sized bag. Takes about 5 minutes to put it up … two poles on each axis with a waterproof cover. Three windows … main one for the camera and two side ones. All covered in a mesh. A second inner mesh available on the main window. Both side windows can be covered. Entrance is at the back. If you’re any taller than 5-7 then you’d want the large hide. Optional floor cover is available. Also a “snoot” which attached to the front of the lens to hide lens movement.

Light wasn’t great this weekend in north Wexford. Very grey with lots of rain. We got the odd window of nice light so I tried to grab a few shots. The hide works like a treat. At one point the ground around me was thick with birds. Never saw the feeders like this before. Also had some Yellow Hammers which I never though came down from the hill above the house. Think I also saw a Bullfinch … haven’t seen one in 14 months.

Here’s a male Chaffinch that came for a look:

Can we expect to see this hide on tour around the country then?

Of course… is another chat up line to add to the arsenal. …”Hi..would you like to see my Hide…”..hehehe!!

I knew someone would notice that. I’d already done enough PP to bring up the clouds and said “screw it”.#

Will the hide be on tour? Yeap. It’s in the back of my car with the tripod and monopod. When sunrise gets a little earlier, I’ll hopefully get some shots of the birds around Belfast Harbour. Lots of gulls, curlews, godwits, etc hanging around on the mud and they come pretty close to solid land as long as there’s no humans there. I’ll try to set up early one morning and lie in wait … hoping not to be picked up by the PSNI for suspicious behaviour near an airport.

It’s actually a little mobile. If it’s not windy then you don’t need to “spike” it into the ground. You can then just lift it from the inside. Trick is to remember to grow a third arm to pick up your seat and tripod while you lift the hide from the inside and walk around like a camoflaged pacman.
