Thanks eas. It all came together in that one. The light, the moment, the separation from the background.
easParticipantPeteMcDMemberI had a 430EX flash back right, set on one of the bass cans at about waist height. Fired in TTL with a 580 on camera. Trickled in as much ambient as I could handheld.
AllinthemindParticipantLovely shots… Are you adding the defocus or is it your lens? Looks like a tilt lens effect.
Si
PeteMcDMemberThanks Si.
The defocus is done in post—I think it is a little over-blurred actually.
I can’t justify a tilt shift lens, though I’ve been wishing for one more and more often. When you can recreate the effect in PS in 2 min it is hard to justify a £700 lens. I think if I was shooting more architecture then the tilt shift would pay for itself, but it’s not worth it just to create a defocused effect, which is really just a (faddy) stylistic treatment.
jessthespringerParticipantI’m not so sure about the defocus effect Pete. It’s a bit strong for my taste, I’m not sure the pictures need it,
they’re both very strong without it.
Have you printed them? I saw some pictures with this effect in a friends wedding album recently,
it was very obvious PP and I couldn’t figure out why the photographer felt the need to do it, the pictures were quite nice without it,
I just didn’t think the effect added anything to the print.Sorry if that sounds harsh…
You did really well with the third, it’s lovely. And, I know how dark that room is, which makes it all the more impressive.
Sinead
PeteMcDMemberThanks Sinead. I think I agree with you—the effect is too strong and is becoming (ironically) the focal point of the image. I haven’t printed them yet, but I’m pretty sure they will look too strong. I appreciate your honest feedback.
P5faytheParticipantHi Pete,
I hope I’m not just repeating what’s already been said.
I have come back to these a few times since you first posted. From first view #3 looked really good. I’d be well pleased with
that if ’twas mine.I have’nt been able to figure out #1 at all. Maybe if there was something
really interesting going on at the doorway.#2 had real potential. The candles & hallway leading towards
the couple is good.
Maybe if they were facing this way or in a tender pose like #3.
If the 3rd person was’nt there.
It definitely has a lovely athmosphere.I find that blurring added in post processing has to be quite subtle to look natural.
I like what you were trying to do and #3 makes it worth the effort.
All in my opinion of course.
Well done.
John.
