This is my nephew Nathan. Along with all the usual bits and bobs of retouching that I usually do. Not that much really. Mostly cloning out hot spot and distractions from the background and food from his clothes. I tried to do things a little bit different on the final finish of the image. I created a B&W filter in photoshop and dropped the opacity down to about 20%. Then created another on top, set the opacity to about 40% and changed the blend mode to soft light.

    really like it.

It has a very natural look, but still looks different ( in a good way). I think the finishing touches you described are keepers.

I am always torn between having really vibrant bright images or more subtle muted colours

Thanks Gaffo. I’m the same, vibrant or colourless. For children shots it’s very difficult sometimes. I guess this is a nice compromise…. :)

I do like the colouring in this-
    although he looks distracted slightly,
as if someone has just produced some chocolate…
a direct look might have been more powerful,
either that, or one looking further off to the side-

I seldom comment on pictures of children,
but I’m sure I don’t have to tell you about the importance of getting down to their level-
pretty much all your other pictures do that-
    This looks more spontaneous though,
I suppose they can get more self-conscious in the time it takes to lower the camera…

I think there’s space to remove some of the top, to bring it to 4×5-
I think the squarer formats are good for portrait portraits…
