ND filter colour cast

    HI lads,
    i’ve just started experimenting with a 10 stop ND lee filter, wich i combined with a graduated ND, i ended up with a strong dark blue colour cast.
    is this common? how do you avoid that? thanks.

    Hi Philippe,

    I have the B+W ND 110 (screw on ten stop) – and it creates a orange/warm colour cast.
    The Lee is renowned for its cooler tone.

    What you have to do is shoot in RAW (or NEF for Nikon) – and correct the colour cast in adobe camera RAW.

    when using a 10 stop filter with another filter i.e grad filter you are holding back even more light, so colour cast is going to be a problem, i have the new B&W ND110 which has very little colour cast but when i add more filters a magenta cast is clearly viable. as bren said shot raw and correct it easily in camera raw or the software that comes with you camera.
    there no way avoiding this colour cast

    You need to adjust the white balance in camera raw. If you use the white balance eyedropper tool to select an area of white in the image ( a cloud maybe) and you will get a proper white balance reading that will get rid of the colour cast. I found that my white balance reading for the big stopper was averaging around 11250. Hope this helps.

    The Lee Big Stopper wasn’t designed as a technical filter, so you can expect it not to be 10 stops at all (perhaps even more), and they all have the cast you mention.

    Shoot RAW and set the camera white balance to a custom temperature of 10000K. This won’t sort out the cast completely, but it will allow you to see a reasonable preview of what your image will look like when it isn’t all blue.

    Further correction is then needed in RAW processing to set a custom WB of between 10000 and 20000 Kelvin.
