Need Advice on Buying

Hi,
Im a beginner getting into real photography (not snap shots on a small compact). I have really taken a liking to black and white photography. I dont have to much money to spend, around 150-200 euro. Its not alot but my thinking is to get myself a second hand film body with one or two second hand lenses and build up to a digital body and lenses eventually. I have found an offer in my price range to get a Canon 1000F with two lenses, both Canon Ultrasonic lenses. The first lens is a 35-80mm and the second is a 75-300mm.
My question is this. Is the Canon 1000F a good camera and also these lenses, and is this the best path to get into photography considereing my price range?I would appreciate any help or advice as I dont wont to waste money on something I dont need. Thank you.
miki gParticipantHi Daniel.
I haven’t used a Canon 1000f, but have & use Canon cameras & the quality is great. From reviews I’ve read, the 1000f is a good beginners camera which produces nice crisp images. It’s a bit bulky & heavy and not very fast at autofocusing. So if your not into fast action shots, I’d say it would probably be worth the money. The quality of the lenses are more important than the camera.brendancullenParticipantHi Daniel,
I’m not familiar with a 1000F and probably would not recommend a 35mm film camera at this time.
This Canon 1000D model is an entry level Digital SLR – and could be perfect for you. It has all the modes for handling almost every situation – given an appropriate lens. Its been out a while so there are 2nd hand models available.
Using a DSLR – you can put them on a PC straight away – and delete / print only what you want in a matter of minutes or hours. Easy to share then with friends via internet etc.
I’d strongly recommend the 50mm f/1.8 as your first lens purchase if on an extra tight budget – which you can easily get 2nd hand for about €70-80 – and only buy the camera body. You can’t beat the optical quality of this lens ….at this price. Its super.

The Fine PrintMemberSome good advice so far. I wouldn’t recommend buying this particular camera though. The 1000F was a pretty basic camera and age will have done nothing to improve it: Over on photo.net people bemoan issues with light seals and shutter problems with these over 15 year old early AF consumer SLRs. (Nothing wrong with old cameras per-se (I use 50+(!) year old stuff almost daily), just that plastic consumer cameras don’t wear as well as others). Your quote is also way overpriced, although the lenses are basically ok if in good condition.
Not sure what I’d get instead, because there are so many options. Perhaps get something less electronic. Also consider how you’re going to deal with the film right up to the print. Not very daunting actually, except that most people wouldn’t even know how to advise you properly, suffice to say you’ll need SOME extra gear to make full use of any b/w film advantage.
PM me if needed for more detailed help. I’m in both camps, film and digital, with 20 years+ pro experience….and no brand, nor medium loyalty/snobbery whatsoever. I’m thus happy to discuss outcome-driven options in a more unbiased way that may otherwise offend people who have become “branded”. :)
