Back in the day, zoom lenses tended to be bad in general, but the zoom lenses in today’s market tend to perform fairly good overall. There are good & bad versions of all type of lenses and this includes prime lenses and another thing to consider is that people may have different opinions on what is good or bad.
Zoom lenses don’t usually perform as well as primes & don’t tend to be great in poor lighting, so if you shoot sports, for example, with fast moving subjects, you may not be happy with the results, even if the lens was great optically. Using the same lens for a portrait could be great, but the maximum aperture of f/4 may not give you the narrow DOF that you might want.
I really think, it depends on what you want to shoot & what kind of quality you expect from a lens. Generally speaking, it is better to move yourself closer to your subject instead of zooming the lens, but this isn’t always possible.
