    Why!!

Opened raw from my 350d no probs

    please help!!

I’d assume that you need to download the raw convertor plug-in for the 30D from the Adobe site.

either grab the latest camera raw plugin for photoshop

or use the raw convertor that comes with the camera

or one of the free trial ones, lightroom for example

Yes it is just because your adobe Raw software needs to be updated. Do a search and download the latest version and it should open no problem. I had the same problem when changing from 20D to 5D.
    Happy shooting!

Congrats on the new camera – just in time for the quiet period during Christmas to settle down and get to grips with it  I strongly recommend you togive Canon’s RAW converter, Digital Photo Professional, a try. It’s a bit quirky and not necessarily the most intuitive to use but if you can use PS then you’ll have no problems at all with it – have a look here to see what some other Canon users are saying about DPP.

And I don’t know what others will say about ‘picture styles’ but stick to faithful or neutral settings is my advice. Of course if you shoot RAW you can change at any time after the shot in any event.

I second DPP! I think you’re fresh into it at a good time. I bought my Canon a little over a year ago and hated DPP. With their recent revision (ver 2.2 in Sept) I gave it another lash and find it simple and effective; love using it. Personally I find it pretty intuitive. But definitely basic.

Oops – forgot about that. Didn’t think you needed a login for that. Some topics require a login, others don’t – I knew the “People” section required a login, but didn’t realise the “Post Processing & Printing” section required one. Apologies for that. But it’s worth getting a login and I’ve never gotten spam off FredMiranda.com.

    Thanks for the info.

Yeah, using this version of DPP does make life a wee bit easier.

On a bum note, with my version of OS X, I can’t view previews of images captured with my 30D in the folder window. Pretty sure there is a patch included in the latest version of this OS, but as I have only an ISDN connection I don’t think I will be fixing this bug today…

You mean the thumbnails when viewing the folder? Can’t help you there, I’m afraid as I’m a Windows users. Having said that, I can’t view RAW thumbnails either, as I’m using Windows 2000, but I must admit, I’ve nver found that to be a stumbling block. I tend to do pretty much everything through DPP, including browsing and editing. For the odd occassion that I don’t want to fire up DPP and need to find a file I use a free application called Faststone Image Viewer. One of the best free progrmas available although not much use to Mac users though, as it’s a Windows only product. :( (the significant number of really useful apps that are Windows only is one thing that’s held me back from moving to a Mac :( )

No need for the small print Thorsten,
If you want a quick preview in OS X,
drop the files into the rather unimaginatively entitled Preview.
From there they can be saved as .psd, .jpg, whatever.

    Though I do admit,
    for a pc user,
it does take some getting used to-

OSX Tiger (I’m on 10.4.8) previews all files (CR2 and JPG) from my 20D all OK, in the Finder window, plus any other means I choose (Preview, slideshow, ImageBrowser, DPP, whatever). My beast is an olde worlde (PPC) Powerbook.

What version of OSX have you?
