NEF files & Photoshop CS2

Hi – I just installed Photoshop CS2 on my laptop and when I try to drop the NEF files into PSCS2, I get a message saying that it does not recognise this type of file….I use the same system on my G5 in the office with the same versions of both software, so I can’t understand why it’s not working….
    Any ideas? :?

For Photoshop you have to use the latest version of the ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) plugin that supports your camera type. You can download this for free from the Adobe website. Once you have it installed, CS2 and Bridge should open your files with no hassle. If you can’t find it on the website, let me know and I’ll either send on the link or the latest version of the file.

Thanks Ciaran – I’ll have a look and get back to you.

Had to download it last week, find it here:

You just get a zip file, you have to read the instructions on where to put the file inside the zip file, not a straightforward install but pretty straighforward. Any probs let us know :)

Hi. I had same problem as paperdoll and followed your advice also and got sorted – many thanks. However…. When I downloaded the plugin from Adobe there were 2 files! One was the Raw plug in which I dropped into the ‘File formats’ folder as advised but the second one was the DNG plug in which I would also like to start using so that I can standardise all my image formats as I go along (imagine it will be a blessing in months/years to come!). Do I drop this into the same folder or what? Any advice would be very welcome. Thanks

Hi Thorsten, I found the installation pretty OK. Any help or suggestions from you or anyone else regarding the DNG plug in?
    Many thanks.

Sorry Pat – can’t help you there I’m afraid. I don’t use the DNG plugin, prefering to keep everything in Canon’s CR2 format for the moment at least.

The DNG is a converter, not a plug-in (or at least that’s all it was when I downloaded it and tried it). Just unzip/unpack it and stick it into your Adobe program directory and create a short cut icon from there. There’s no fancy plug-in and it’s run externally to Photoshop. For what my opinion is worth, it’s not worth the effort.
