Nerves

    Hey,

Anybody else ever suffer from ‘nerves’??????

When I started photography in college it was mainly studio based. Lately I have been taking snaps of the kids and that.
Then I was approached and asked to be the second photographer at a wedding. Nerves really set in. I had certain shots that I really wanted to get but didn’t. I wanted “arty” shots of the flowers and cake for example. I just got myself stressed out. I feel really bad now because I let poeple down and I really needed the experience and start a portfolio.

I put some of the picture in the wedding critique section.

Any body any words of wisdom (other than stick to taking snaps).

    oh man…
i suppose the more u do it the more confident u get but the first few times it sucks….
i’m no expert by no means and still everytime i need to get pictures for something that i feel “important” i shit myself..
friend of mine had a baby and for long time i had been telling them that i wanted to get few shots when was only few weeks old.. had a lot of research done, loads of ideas to copy and try to do myself.. when the baby finally arrived, went to their home with all the bits and bobs i had plans to use just to completely freeze.. couldn’t think of what to do.. kept shooting without knowing what i was at… felt bad for few days after… got few pictures that they were happy with but i wasn’t a bit… what an opportunity wasted…
ah well… i suppose we all have to start somewhere and things can only get better ( i hope) :)
    keep it up!!

    Hi Belinda,

I suppose the reason for failing at any task is lack of the required knowledge/training, having one of those
bad days that can happen to anybody or that you are not cut out for the job in the first place.

Have you ever noticed how people who are really good at doing anything seem to make it look easy.

I think this comes from an absolute confidence in their ability to do the job.
This ability generally dosen’t happen by accident and usually involves an amount of training and practice.

When we take photographs in an amateur capacity failing to achieve the result we want results in us being
dissapointed and as very few people, if any, will even know we failed the consequences, relatively, are easy to get over.

When we have to take pictures in a professional capacity failure is not really an option. That’s pressure.
To consistently produce the required results we need to have an intimate knowledge of our equipment and how to use
it, know exactly what the customer expects and how to produce it and have the temperament to handle any situation
that may arise when carrying out the assignment.

These may not be the words of wisdom you asked for but I know of no other way to be successful at anything other
than working so hard at it that you will become one of those people who make it look easy.

Don’t forget that we are our own worst critics! I’ve had people enthuse about shots that didn’t please me at all.

    Hey,

    Thanks for that….

I like that “the more I practice, the lucker I get”, makes sence.

I have taken photos at weddings before, but this is the first time I my services were requested. 5faythe you made good point regarding temperament, which is a very important aspect. Something I have to work on.

On bright side, no cash changed hands.

Here’s a link if any one wants a look.

    Ok,

    Just a quick update.

I was on Facebook, the groom (from the above mentioned wedding) has changed his profile pic to one that I took at his wedding – I guess i must have done something right :D

Some nice shots on your page but don’t be afraid to get closer!
The image of the couple cutting the cake was nice only for
the head of a guest within the image. It’s those small details
that turn into major nuisances later.

Hey, Nice shots. I know what you are talking about. A friend asked me to do a wedding and I hadn’t used my camera for around a year. I can’t remember now but I had some issue with my flash which meant that I had to use the ambient light. It took me over a year to show them the contacts, I was so embarrassed. They were happy enough with the results, probably just glad to see them at all!
I think it is important to remember that confidence says a lot about your work. If you are critical of it to your client then they will notice however if you say nothing they will probably just see that the grooms tie was crooked or that the bride is fat or has wrinkles. They aren’t looking for blown highlights in the sky or anything that you might feel you could have done better.
I like the shot of the two kids with the juice, I dodn’t even look at the image, I just thought Ribena+kids+white clothes=DISASTER.

    Best of Luck

Ya, but the groom is a photographer!!!! (OK, not a ‘pro-tog’, but he knows his way around a DSLR and is an expert & teacher of photoshop) so he does notice things like highlights, soft focus ect. He was highly critical of barrell distortion in a lot of the pro-photgrapher shots for example.

Yes – white clothes and black current juice – it was me that gave them the juice. The poor kids, it was about 4.30pm, they had anything since 12pm, I had to go to a kiosk outside Kilkenny castle.

Well the fact that the groom knows something about photography and liked your photos should give you some confidence :)

Well done on your photos. Keep up the good work and start believing in yourself !!!. :D
