never lend your camera…

I lent my camera (Nikon D200) to a friend, set it up nicely, P mode, auto iso, everything auto. He went on a holiday and I thought what could go wrong, I used the thing for two years and it never broke in my hands..

He gave it back, and the dial on the upper left edge, on which the WB/Qual/ISO button are was turned 90 degrees. Not the dial that you can set the single frame/continuous etc modes, but the dial above it. He was looking for the timer and thought, he could force it to move. Now the buttons on the top don’t work, including the ISO setting.. Could anyone tell, is that dial meant to be turning or is it broken now? I never remember trying it before.

The guy will get a good beating when I see him, that’s for sure.

Right, this isn’t as hard to fix as you might think…

First, take a deep breath, exhale slowly – then call your mate and tell him he owes you a D300

    Voila!

Jeepers! I take it it’s not a ‘dial’ at all but the cap on top with the buttons that he has turned? Holy goat, how in the world did he even get that to move at all? Probably didn’t realise you need to press the release button to turn the actual dial. I’d say it’s going to have the wires ripped out of the contacts for the buttons and needs to be stripped and redone. Might be a write-off, might get a lightly used secondhand for not much more than a repair.

Yeah, it’s hard to explain, it wasn’t a dial before but it is now  Turning, clicking and eveything…

    Friends don’t do that-

He will have it repaired, won’t he?
On the positive side, it doesn’t sound like a very expensive repair, though I wouldn’t actually know, of course-
However, I don’t think there’s any such thing as a very cheap repair…

Jeez. He’s going to have to pay for repair. No two ways about it.

Any advice where should I have it repaired? Portobello?

    Eire

    SLR Service Centre
    Rathmolyon
    Co Meath
    Eire
    Tel (Eire) 04695 57151
    Tel (From UK) 00353 4695 57151

    That’s the Nikon centre.

I’ve had one lens repaired there, took over a year altogether, and came back incorrectly assembled.
    It wasn’t cheap.

However, the one that used to be in Portobello was on time, every time,
    and good work too.

They’ve moved, don’t have the new address handy-
might be tempting fate to look it up…

    I think that’s DML:

    DML
    Unit 5, Western Business Park
    Oak Close
    Dublin 12
    Ireland

Got a lens repaired by SLR Service and it came back with dust and a small blotch inside the rear element that really pisses me off because it’s a nano coat lens that was otherwise spectacularly good into the light, now not so much… Could have gotten them on a bad day though cos otherwise they were great and very fast.

Haven’t used DML, they dont seem to advertise repairs, do they do them in-house?

The other one in Portobello was PRS, Photographic Repair Services, and
they have moved, but last time I spoke to them they still hadn’t managed
    to move in to their new premises. They are, however, still taking on repairs;
all you need do is phone them and they’ll meet you to collect items for
repair and meet you again to return them. Very efficient and reliable service
indeed. You can reach them on 01 4781638…
