I’m looking to buy a Digital SLR. Any recommendations on what is the best for up to 700 Euro? I’ve been hearing good things about the Nikon D50, any other suggestions?
Thanks.
AliParticipantHey amnesia and welcome to the forum. You will find some info on various cameras in the Camera section on the
site. You might find some helpful info on the D50 in this threadhttps://www.photographyireland.net/viewtopic.php?t=169
Happy posting and let us know what you decide :)

IOPParticipantHi amnesia_x,
the 2 most popular dSLR’s that my students have are the Nikon D50 (approx ?580) and the Canon 350D (approx ?750). The 350D wins by about 2 to 1.
Both come standard with a kit lens which will give effectively an 18mm wide angle to approx 55mm telephoto zoom. dpreview has a side by side comparison here http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond50/page19.asp
The money saved by buying the D50 could be put into a bigger zoom lens, or see if the extra cash could get you the excellent 18-70 Nikon zoom which is equivalent to 28mm wide angle to 105mm telephoto (nice reach).
Good luck with the decision.
joe_elwayParticipantMake sure you try them in your hand before buying. A good friend of mine (a veteran pro shooting for magazines) made his decision between Nikon and Canon based on the handling. There’s really not much between the performance of the gear.
One factor to consider, Nikon gear is priced more competitively in Ireland. Canon have been ripping us off in Ireland so if you want to buy in Ireland I’d consider Nikon.
amnesia_xParticipantIts a tough one. I’m looking for a deal on the D70, theres a few on ebay. If that doesn’t happen it will probably be the D50 with extra 18-70 lens. Thanks for the guidance and more suggestions are always welcome.
