BlackBladeParticipant
Lads and ladies I have a choice and need opinion’s…
my bro is buying me a canera and has said he can get a good deal on two cameras..
1.Canon 400D
2.Nikon D40…What would you pic and why?????
MartinOCParticipantCanon or Nikon? a contensious issue. You can find some fairly balanced info on DP review ( http://www.dpreview.com ) or other sites has well as endless inane debates (you might start another :) )
Try to get a hold of both, to see how they feel in your hands to use.
I have a 400d, I think its great, but I never had a nikon to compare to.From the review of the D40X ( http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40x/page27.asp )
“So in conclusion, the D40X really is just as good as the D40, with the added benefit of a little bit more resolution and slightly faster continuous shooting. But is it enough to take the pole position as the ultimate compact ten megapixel DSLR? That’s harder to say, image quality-wise it’s a dead heat with the EOS 400D (except at high sensitivities); it’s quicker and more comfortable to use, but very slightly less featured, especially if you consider lens compatibility. It would be hard to recommend one over the other and the answer would depend solely on your preferences (I’m calling it a draw).”
Nikon is a bit cooler a brand, I would say, because they are a bit less common.
BlackBladeParticipantThanks man great link!!
I have to say i swaying in the canon’s direction so far
MartinOCParticipantYou’re welcome! If its the D40 and not the D40X there may be a resolution disadvantage, but otherwise no big diff.
I read that the 400D has more megapixels than the 350D but about the same image quality as closer pixels on the
same size sensor can degrade results.Get lots of opinions, I think there was a Nikon v Canon thread on here recently.
Btw congratulations, nice brother!
DuchovnyParticipantHey mate
450D its out, its the price difference so big?
The big fight Canon vs Nikon will be a never ending story, i myself have a 350D and a 40D so i would advise Canon :P
But the best way its to go to some shop grab both camera’s and then you probably will feel witch one is the right for you (Canon i know) :PExpresbroParticipantI think the two you probably need to be comparing at this level is the Nikon D60 and the Canon 450D.
Check both of them out as the guys said…see how you like them…
Then buy the Nikon!!!!
Mwahahaha!!
Just kidding… (not really!!)

8)plainoldmeMemberNo Robbie’s right buy the Nikon
I had looked at the 400D (or 450D) myself. THen I wandered on over to the Nikon stand the day I was buying it, (after MONTHS of ranting about how I wanted a 400D!) and Picked up the Nikon D80. Wandered around the shop with it for a while, trying it out, and completely fell in love with it. END OF CANON DESIRES!
But anyway, it’s really just personal opinion at the end of the day. I couldnt tell you why I changed my mind at the last minute. Only just that when holding the Nikon it felt GOOD!
DuchovnyParticipantYeah its really a matter of personal choise, keep in mind that Canon as more lens as well…
But just grab both try them both and then pick (Canon)
Take some High ISO pictures with both and make ur decision :P
BlackBladeParticipantThanks guy’s….
Ye see the bro is getting it in spain at half book price to here…..
So i only have a choice of the D40 or 400D……
So ill mail him all opinions and see what he gets for me :D
Ill let you know, Thanks again :shock:nfl-fanParticipantNikon D40 is a 6 million pixel camera.
Canon 400D is a 10 million pixel camera.
If you go with the Nikon D40 then you’re limited to the lenses you can use. Something to do with no lens motor onboard the body… or something along those lines.
I had both a D40X (the 10 million pixel version) and 400D at one stage, but much prefered the feel/handling and interface of the 400D so stuck with this at the time. Both produced fine results.
Both cameras are small in the hands… a bit too small… I purchased an official Canon Battery Grip for the 400D which gave it that little bit extra in terms of handling. I’m not 100% sure but I don’t think there’s an official Nikon branded grip available for the D40.

I don’t envy whoever wants to buy a camera now, they are all fantastic, but there is so many of them… You won’t really ever need many lenses, only two or three, and every manufacturer has beautiful glasses at almost any focal length.
You will have to hold them in hand to be able to tell that Nikon is better :)
PixelleMemberWhen I went camera-shopping, I held both the 400D and the D80, the 400D felt good, but the viewfinder of the D80 swung it for me. In other words, try before you [that is, your brother] buy.
MarkKeymasterAs Pixelle says, pick them up and see what you like.
As for Nikon vs Canon vs anything else, well there is no point to be honest.
Brian_CParticipantGiven a choice between the D40 and D400, I’d go for a Sony A200 or A350. :D The A350 is a 14.2mp camera and has in-camera shake reduction, meaning all your lenses will have the shake-reduction feature.
Don’t forget the D40 is being replaced by the Nikon D60.
