An alternative view perhaps?

randomwayMemberI would buy a used Canon 30D, 40D, 5D or the like or a Nikon D200, D300, and a normal f/2.8 zoom lens from Sigma or Tokina for a start and see what else is needed. I started with a Nikon D200 and the 18-70 fantastic little kit lens, cheap as chips now, you could get the same kit for €500 now and spens the rest on traveling.
aoluainParticipantsomething to think about . . .
If you are planning on buying this outside the EU you WILL be liable
for around 30% tax and duty. The post offices along with courier companies are now collecting the revenue and are holding the
packages until payment is received. If you want to go Canon a used 350D or 20D preferably the 20D as John mentioned.
these should be available rather cheaply and can still produce good quality shots.dNigParticipantHey all,
I’ve play with both Canon and Nikon and I must say I preferred the feel of the Nikon.
So I’m thinking about a Nikon D90, any recommendations on what lense to go with this camera?
Cheers
markst33ParticipantdNigParticipantdNigParticipantOh, just read this chaps review on it and apparently the lense isn’t great?

petercoxMemberI’m not a Nikon user, so can’t really speak with authority on the lenses. However, I had a quick look and that lens (like any long-range zoom lens) is a compromise design. You get a lightweight, inexpensive lens that gives you good coverage from wide angle to short telephoto. You also get pretty severe barrel distortion at the wide end of the range and apparently some pretty bad chromatic aberration also. Optical performance seems to be average otherwise.
For the price, it seems reasonable if you can live with its shortcomings, although there may well be better options at similar prices.
I would avoid Ken Rockwell’s site, incidentally – his information can’t be relied upon as he frequently says things that are just plain wrong, but mixed in with enough accuracy that he has credibility.
Cheers,

Is cameralabs.com a creditable site?
Never heard of them; try resellerratings to find out — there is also a UK site
and there may be other ratings sites.dNigParticipantdNigParticipantCheers
A quick question on weather proofing…
I see that the Pentax K20d is “Weather Proofed”. The other two cameras I had been looking at where the Nikon D90 & Canon EOS 40D (If I can find it).
How would either of these cameras fair if they got caught in a bit of a downpour?[/quote]
dNigParticipantSo I bit the bullet and purchased a Nikon D90 w/ 18-105mm. I ended up heading up to Sprucefield outside Lisburn and bought it in an Argos (£744 = €850). Worked out cheaper than Jessops and Calumet plus €200 saved on the South (sorry Irish economy).
Anyway the camera seems fantastic. And the pics look great compared to my wee Fuji Finepix F31d. I guess I can’t really say how good it is as I don’t have the experience to compare. But I’m sure it’ll do me good for years to come!
aoluainParticipantNice one,
Congratulations on that! It is hard sometimes to take in all the
information on cameras and then to choose one over the other.Well you are on a good forum here if you need any info on it.
