New Canon 450D or Nikon D200 (2nd hand)
-
fuzzywuzzyParticipant
Hi, hope I’m not starting a huge debate here
I’m about to buy my first DSLR (moving up from a bridge camera). I was thinking about a Canon 450D with kit lens (new). I have the offer of a second hand Nikon D200 (from a friend, so I know it has been looked after).Which would you choose??
randomwayMemberWhen I bought my D200 I had a look at the 400D and 30D and I remember that the 400D was a very small camera. Image quality depends more on the lenses you use, not the camera body, but you might want to handle the cameras before committing to buy either. Ask your friend to lend you the Nikon D200 for a day or two and do some intensive shooting with it. If you don’t like it, or it’s too large, heavy.. get the 450D. You will be happy with either of them.
MartinParticipantI’m an Nikon user, its hard for me to say this but id go for the canon. More megapixels, newer camera possibly better features etc. The Nikon D200 is great, have one myself but think the Canon 450 is possibly better value if your getting them at the same price. The build quality of the Nikon would be way better it being a metal body though…..
M
EDIT: Changed my mind: I would go with the D200
AllinthemindParticipantThere may be a few more MPs in the Canon. Useability wise the D200 is far more functional, IMO. Best thing, as said above, is to have a play with both, see how they fit in your hands, see how easily you can move the settings with the camera to your eye etc etc. Generally he Canon kit lenses are a bit “meh”… (naff). The Nikon Kit lenses (most of them) are better.
Si
weelesMemberD200 is built like a tank, fits beautifully in the hand and has capabilities beyond even what most Pro’s will ever use. It is heavy though, and you don’t mention if a lens is included.
Many of my friends have canons and they are also great cameras.
Typical cost on ebay for the D200 is around £400 – £430 Body Only.
If the D200 includes a lens, something like the Nikkor 18 – 70, and the price is right, then this is your best bet, but as other posters have said, try the cameras to see which suits you.
PS Don’t be swayed by Megapixels, DSLR’s are a whole new ballgame and more MP has con’s as well as pro’s, noise to name but one!
fuzzywuzzyParticipantThanks for all of your replies. A relative has the 450D, so I had a very quick trial of that. It will all depend on how the Nikon feels. I’d be getting a good bargain with the Nikon and there are 3 lenses included in the deal. Will let you know which one I choose…….can’t wait!! :D
joeyvwParticipantNikon D200 without a doubt. I’m a nikon user and i find them very user friendly also the d200 is really the first step to a pro DSLR.
let us know how you get onemjayParticipantAlso consider this. The decision is bigger than just choosing between a Canon 450D or a Nikon D200.
By that I mean you are choosing between Canon System and Nikon System.
Once you buy your first camera you will most likely follow that up with a extra lens or two and possibly other items such as a Flash Gun or perhaps a remote controller. Once you have invested in these items, when the time comes to upgrade your camera body you will have to stick with that manufacturer or else you will have to sell all your lenses and buy new ones. That can be expensive.
It is not unheard of for people to change from Canon to Nikon or vice versa, but once you start off on one or the other you usually stick to it for quite a long time if not for ever.
So perhaps the question might be…. Do I want to go with Canon or Nikon … or indeed others such as Pentax, Sony or Olympus?
I have Canon system and will most likely stick with it… If I had a clean slate tomorrow I would probably go Nikon
Apologies if that just made your decision more difficult  :)
aoluainParticipantTotally agree with Emjay,
Once you start off with a particular system, canon or nikon or whatever and you buy
into all the other gear it is very hard to change from that system to another.I think there is very little anyway between Canon and Nikon.
I shoot with Canon and I have learned recently that their Lenses particularly
the L series Lenses are not all as good as they are made out to be.The Canon quality control is dissapointing from what I ahve read.
Canon are best for Medium to long telephoto lenses while their wide angles
leave a bit to be desired, according to various reports I have read.Having said all that I wouldnt be too familiar with Nikon but I know their
new G 14-24mm wide angle lens is a cracker!my 2 cents
AlanfuzzywuzzyParticipantJust want to say thanks for your help. I decided to go with the Nikon D200. Got it yesterday, can’t wait to start experimenting.
MarkKeymasterExcellent camera, have one myself.
We’ll look forward to seeing the results :)
Enjoy !!
