New Cave – Sea Tunnel under Kinbane

I managed to add to my cave series this evening without too much risk to life and limb.

This one is a tunnel that runs through the Kinbane headland. I also got an interesting one showing the White Head and Fair Head together. I liked the contrasting hard and soft.

    What do you think?

First pic for me Andy – like the softness of the water from the length of your exposure…

Bet you were holding on tight to you camera – looks like there’s not a lot of room to stand wherever you are

    Nice work Andy,
I like both of these but #1 stands out for me . As you stated the contrasting hard and soft work well here.

First one for me too Andy at first look. I think #2 could grow on me if seen at a larger size, and, ahem, I think it’d look good as a print

Hiya Andy, I think these are the first two cave project photo’s that actually have a touch of your own style in them. All the cave shots up to now, have been, to me anyway, just shots of caves, but these two defo have your own touches of style and flavour in them.

    Mucho good.

    Thanks you AJ, Brian,

Brian, glad you like these. The 2nd probably won’t fit into the project although it does have a similar feel.

Now here’s a question for you all.

Only one of these is HDR, which one?

Cant say am a big fan of the cave stuff andy but they are well processed and they seem to get a lot of intrest so more power to ya ;)

This is a great spot i was down last year with the girlfriend for the sunset and didnt get time to shoot much but i will visit again, Is it still closed off andy ?

Thanks Simons. Deep, dark caves are never going to be everyones cup of tea. No, my precious.

    Closed off?

Nothing that a hop, skip and a jump won’t solve.

The first has the usual challenge of exposure in the underground environment that holds a magnetic attraction to you. However, you usually capture more detail in the shadows that this one which makes me think that this one is NOT HDR – because you normally HDR the cave images.

The calm effect in the sea in the second also leads me to think that its the HDR. And I like the effect. Great detail in the cliff, although a greater contrast between the sea and fair head would have been an improvement.

Glad to see you are continuing to make your way out of the caves!

    Thank you Brian,

Interesting observations. You are partly correct.

You noticed the difference in the first image compared to my other cave images and there is indeed a difference. This one was very different to the others I’ve taken because I am looking from outside inwards (although of course it is a cave tunnel). Instead of just the direct light in front I also had light from behind. For that reason I didn’t require such extreme exposure range. But I did in fact use HDR, albeit with only 2 exposures rather than the usual 5. I’ve probably laid off the foreground detail more because there really wasn’t an awful lot there although I may have another go at bringing it out.

The 2nd image is a straight exposure, not HDR. I did consider a burn of the headland but I thought that might break up the ‘L’ shaped softness around the headland.

Thanks Brian. We must get out again soon. Next low spring tide is on July 20th. Keep your diary free and we’ll go and find the Mayor’s cave at whiterocks.

    Hi Andy

Thanks for the invite. I’ll be in France on 20 July, hopefully photographing French sunsets! as well as drinking French wine and eating French cheese. Might even play with the kids.

    Maybe next time.

You mean you would actually choose that red wine, fine cheese, sunshine and fun with the kids over being completely immersed in a stagnant pond?

    Surely that’s just not right.
