New chip for the Sigma lens ?
-
RaimisMember
Hi all, recently i bought 2nd hand Sigma super wide f2.8 24mm lens (canon fit) and it has troubles – shoots at 2,8 aperture only, on lower one shows error99 message on my Canon D400 . The seller advised me to get me a new chip but i am thinking to return the lens back .
Would like to hear, did anybody has experience with chiping – and how dear it can be?
Thank you in advance
ben4130Participantare you changing the aperture on the lens or on the camera body?
I guess if its faulty id send it back to the seller and get a better lens from somebody else
RaimisMemberi’m tried to set aperture with camera and result same – error99
i tried with 2 same lenses – same result
ben4130ParticipantBig FellaParticipantMake sure the lens is fully compatable with the camera.
If you contact sigma on there web site they will tell you how much it will cost to have it rechipped or have the seller do it.Stephen.
aoluainParticipantI had an old Sigma which I used to use n a Canon 1000F film camera.
I tried to use it on a 350D but wouldnt work, I rang Hahnel in Cork
explained my symptoms and they re-chipped it for about €50.00 i think.Lens worked as normal after re-chipping!
I dont have their number but its worth ringing them.

SteveFEMemberLooked into this as I have the same issue with a 28mm f/1.8. it’s deffo a problem of communication between camera and aperture mechanism as it happens at all apertures other than full open (and even just prodding the DoF preview button triggers the error).
Sigma UK’s official line (and maybe that of Hahnel too, not sure) is that they can rechip lenses still in production if they have ERR99 problems with new EOS bodies, but if the lens is out of production, no dice.
It still works fine on my older EOS film bodies, and may work with older EOS digitals like a 10D.
steelydanParticipantI had the same problem with an older sigma lens and my first Digital (10D) and i heard/read about the re-chipping .
So I sent it to Sigma UK and all they charged me was £5 for return shipping,
Even though i bought the sigma second hand ,had no paperwork or warranty. I think i read about it in one of the photography magazines.
Worth am email and asking a few questions.especially if its a good lens.
aoluainParticipantWhen I got my sigma re-chipped by Hahnel
it was definately out of production at the time
maybe they have surplus chips in stock
when they are used up they cannot be replenished…
just a thought.still worth a ring though!

RaimisMemberI rang Hahnel in Bandon today, unfortunately answer was – no, the lens is too old. It’s pitty, the lens works well at 2,8
