New Kilkenny Girl………..

carriedayParticipant
Hey, might as well introduce myself…..I’m Carrie. I’m 20. Originally from Kilkenny. I’m studying Photography in the Arts BA Hons in Swansea Institute, Wales. I tend to stay away from digital purely because I find being in the dark room a lot more rewarding. Digital just seems too easy to me, then again I’m not sure if I’ve given it a fair chance… I just like the fact that I have taken the image, developed the film and printed the picture myself. Have to say I’m quite nifty in both the black and white and colour dark rooms….
Not a lot else to say…. will hopefully have some work up in the Kilkenny Arts Festival this year for the first time! wish me luck!
I suppose some photographers I look up to would be Francesca Woodman, Diane Arbus, Gillian Wearing, Corinne Day, Harry Thuillier Jnr, Sam Taylor Wood…. mainly female photographers there but not many male photographers are coming to mind…. sorry!
Feel free to drop by and say hello….

Thanks for joining the forum with a joke :lol:
Welcome!
CianMcLiamParticipantHi there, I used to love the dark room in school when I had a false first-start in photography. Can still smell the wonderful smells and remember tinkering in near-darkness with barely a clue of what I was supposed to be doing. Now that I have the attic floored I might see about getting something set up for old times sake.
Hope the weather in Wales improves for the weekend, I’m off over there for a few days photography in the south west then on to the Salisbury plains for some night time access into Stonehenge and the surrounding sites. Can’t wait!
Be sure to stick some stuff up here soon.

carriedayParticipantooooooooooooooh thanks for welcoming me so quickly! thought it might take a day or two before i got a reply…. haha….
right I can see myself getting into some arguements over digital versus analogue……. haha!
is anyone with me on the film side of things????
cant see how people dont like dark rooms…. i have to say i hate the smell but love the feeling…..stick in my head phones and I’m as happy as ever! good time to reflect on the photograph iv taken and the state of mind i was in while taking it…..
ExpresbroParticipantHi Carrie..and welcome to PI. You’ll find the folks around here are a lot friendlier than your average photography forum..and there’s usually someone around to help out or answer questions. Quick responses are the norm, not the exception :D
Personally I am relatively new to photography..although I’ve been taking snapshots most of my life. It’s only in the last 6 months or so that I’ve taken up photography seriously..whatever that means :wink:
I’ve only known digital so can’t really comment on film and I’ve never seen the inside of a darkroom. Not that I wouldn’t like to. When I feel more comfortable and accomplished in the digital realm I’ll certainly be looking at film as well.
Anyway..welcome to the forum…looking forward to seeing some of those hard worked for images of yours.
Cheers
Robbie
8)AliParticipantWelcome to the site Carrie, looking forward to seeing your work :) post loads.
jb7ParticipantHi carrieday,
Thanks for the comprehensive introduction-
Good to have you on board-Regarding your poll,
the people have spoken-
and they prefer digital-You’re correct, digital is too easy;
the instant feedback, coupled with the camera’s compulsive list-making of all the variables,
as well as the ability to alter white balance on the go, (as well as after, and to say nothing of fine tuning exposure),
means that many people who wouldn’t have had the patience to learn about photography now quickly become expert.And the camera is an extension of the computer, and ties in so neatly with the web;
the majority of pictures taken nowadays are taken to be viewed on monitors,
and only a tiny proportion will ever be printed.Its possible to be much more productive with digital than you could be with film;
exposing film is an expensive exercise, both in terms of time and money.A lot of film output, particularly colour,
will be digitized anyway,
and will be printed digitally, if it will be printed at all.Whatever your tools and materials,
there is something magical about producing images-
whether it rolls out of an inkjet,
or darkens out of the soup.One is not intrinsically better than the other-
and its good to have a knowledge of many different processes
before deciding which one may be right for a given application-Hope you’re enjoying college,
can’t wait to see some pictures-j
ps- personally, I shoot much more digital than film,
by a factor of thousands-
but film isn’t finished for me just yet-joe_elwayParticipantHi Carrie,
Welcome to the forum. Wow, what a way to kick things off! Next thing you’ll be starting a Windows VS Mac thing :)

jb7ParticipantIf worst come to worst,
you can always join the Gallery of Photography in Temple Bar in Dublin-if you really need your fix-
They have a darkroom and you can rent space by the half day or day-
