Welcome aboard Carrie… seems you have started with a bang.

I’m currently sitting in the digital camp also. I certainly don’t disagree with your argument either but think it’s ‘horses for courses’.

I spent my first few years trying to get into photography with a canon eos30 before digital was really an option. Many of my photographs were poor due to my need to learn about composition/exposure/lighting… and just about everything else that you need to learn. I probably made every mistake in the book… and sometimes still do! It was a useful experience, but quite costly at the time and a little bit hit and miss in terms of whether I was learning enough from my mistakes. When I moved to digital, I had much better feedback, was able to analyse my images in detail without having to print them and it was much easier learn from my mistakes. I therfore think digital is an extremely useful medium, to learn on and to help you improve your technique.

Having said that you do get to a point where you are starting to consistently shoot decent images. You start to take a slower, more considered approach to things and don’t waste quite so many megapixels on duff shots (i’m not sure I am there yet, but I am getting there). At this point I would be interested to try the whole darkroom thing and see if I like it… I sit in front of a computer 9hrs a day for work, anyway and thats more than enough time for anyone.

Anyway that’s enough for now… Welcome again

Have to say..that whole film versus digital thing reminds me of the old CD versus vinyl argument. Pretty much as pointless too.

I’m not sure about this “if it doesn’t hurt it can’t be good” thing either. Just because something is more difficult and more expensive doesn’t mean that it is any better. Maybe I’m off the mark, but to me..the final image produced is what counts. The rest is a personal preference.

There are images on this forum produced by digital and film (then scanned) and most people probably could not tell which is which, and wouldn’t care anyway.

You can sweat and toil in the darkroom, but it isn’t neccessarily going to produce a better image at the end of the day. It’s a personal preference.

If you prefer film..then great..shoot film. If you prefer digital…shoot digital.

I don’t think that a photographer can be defined by what medium he or she chooses to work in.

Your enthusiasm for film based photography is laudible carrieday, but that doesn’t mean it is the only way :D

very good point…. i know i am very biased towards the dark room practice. perhaps it is because i really enjoy it and an ex of mine would torment me for spending “wasted” time in the darkroom (he was very into digital) i found it frustrating that he would critisise my pratice having never spent a day in the darkroom… im just upset that people are being lead into digital and not many people are willing to give the dark room a chance.

the debate is endless and i think we should nip it in the bud right now. all i was trying to figure out is if there is anyone else on here interested in film photography?

both digital and film have their perks. it IS a matter of opinion and i am definately not saying digital is wrong or bad. all i am saying is anyone who has never been in a dark room should try to get into one. just so both can be weighed up equally.

it is great that we are moving forward with technology, but dark room photographers are a dying breed and its sad that people arent even giving the darkroom a chance. it is SO rewarding and just as much can be done in a darkroom as on a computer. people dont realise this.

    ok, end of discussion…. haha

Actually..I think a Darkroom day would be a great idea for a PI outing. I for one would be very interested. I’m sure most of us could lay our hands on some film cameras if we don’t have one already.

Oh and I think your ex was wrong wrong to give you grief for using the darkroom. I personally have found photography to be a very relaxing and rewarding experience…digital or not. It allows time to reflect and look at the world in a different way. I imagine that is part of the attraction to you.

So who’s gonna step up and organise a Film photography day for all us Digital peeps?

    Hello to all.

Well i’m primarly digital but i did recently buy a canon pelix and would love to get into darkroom
and learn how develop a roll. I kinda bought the camera just for the classic look of it but it does work
so shooting a roll and developing it myself would be cool.

I’ve always thought that if you are going be serious about photography you should at least have a basic understanding
of all mediums. I will always be primarly digital but I do feel I need to understand the principles behind film.

    Just my little opinion though

Welcome in by the way – have fun

Someone from Kilkenny doing something else other than hurl??

You’re a freak of nature girl!

Welcome to the site – take time to settle in, won’t you!

As regards Digital v Film – I bought my first SLR some 20 years ago, obviously film. I’ve waited 20 years to get into photography seriously and would have only done this due to the medium of digital. I’m not one that feels you should understand every aspect of photography to get the best out of the passtime. Lifes too short. I use digital due to costs and the freedom. Darkroom processing wouldn’t interest me in the least – I just don’t see the point when you don’t need to. To those that do, by all means. This is an individualistic hobby – everyones flavour and style is their own including how they go about it.

Again, welcome, and it’s nice to see the South East represented a bit more.

    Alan.

aw i gave up on the hurling thing a long time ago! got very bored very quickly! we’re not all hurling fiends ya know haha!

as for what you said about not needing to print in the darkroom when you dont have to… thats completely fine. but you will never know how it feels how great it is to print your own pricture in a darkroom. for me, its the most rewarding feeling iv ever felt in my short 20 years alive! from using both digital and film, i can honestly say digital does not interest me in the slightest. after spending days in the darkroom trying to get a print right and then finally suceeding makes it so worthwhile. you cherish your prints and look after them as if they’re your babies…. however, i feel with digital, if you crease a print or lose it, then you can just go back to your computer where its been saved and print another one off…

i think anyone who has never been in a darkroom can never appreciate the darkroom. if your not interested then fair enough. i dont think someone can say which is better unless you have experienced both sides. obviously the darkroom is not for everyone and thats understandable. some people just dont have the patience to wait and hour for a fibre based print to wash and then a day for it to dry.

maybe its because im in a college which is based primarily on darkroom work and i have the time to print everything myself, thats why i love it.

i think its sad we are moving on and forgetting where we came from. and not just in the field of photography, but in everything else in life. im scared we will forget where we came from at all. we will be so consumed by our computers and cars and technology and everything else, we wont remember where we started from. i think it would be good to get more people into the darkroom even for one day. because i guarantee at least one person will become addicted to the beautiful glow of the safe light and the butterflies you feel waiting for your print to come up as it sits in the developer… this is something a digital photographer will not feel. not to the same extent anyway, because you have already seen your image on the LCD screen on the back of your camera.

just give the darkroom a try, thats all im saying. its bound to sway at least a few of you….

Welcome to Forum Carrieday. I picked digital.

The only film I dealt with over the years was the 35mm roll before moving on to advantix film then digital.
