New/Newer Nikon?

Okay lads, the Nikon D5000 is due out which Ken Rockwell describes as “newer version of the Nikon D90 in a smaller, lighter package with a flippy screen” so just before i put down a big chunk of change for a D700, does anyone know if a there’s another one in the pipeline? :)

I’m not altogether sure that it will be a replacement for the D90, I would suspect it is more of a replacement of the D60

It doesn’t appear to have the same compatibility with other Nikon lenses that the D90 has as it doesn’t have the built in servo motor needed to drive the autofocus of Type G or D autofocus lenses. http://www.europe-nikon.com/product/en_GB/products/broad/1788/specifications.html#20
Nikon list it on their website as a consumer camera whereas the D700 is in the professional section so I would check carefully all the functions and facilities before making the decision. The D700 is priced at nearly €2.5K whereas the D5000 with the 18-55 VR is priced at less then a grand so you will have to weigh up the difference in specs and the big difference in price and decide if the dearer camera is worth the difference.

thanks for your reply david. I am definitely in the market for a full frame and have decided on the d700. i was just wondering if there was anyone in the know who knows if nikon will be releasing like a “d900” or something in the next year! :)

Nikon usually shows new stuff 3 times a year. Next possible term is in September. After that is December. Although there is a huge recession so things may change.
I was expecting something in a higher class, but wasn’t lucky. I’m looking for replacement for my d70s, but new d300 is too expensive. So is d700. Seems my new toy will be d90. D5000 won’t work with my lenses. Flippy lcd would be pretty useful in macro though.
