NEW Nikon D80 launched

Nikon have launched their new D70 camera.

    As they say themselves:
“Featuring an effective 10.2MP imaging sensor, the D80 is the most advanced enthusiasts digital camera we’ve ever produced – further narrowing the distinction between professional and amateur photographic equipment.”

Had a read of the spec and while it seems great its a pity that they put no CF slot into it

Have to agree.. spec wise it’s basically a D200 for all intents and purposes. But Nikon’s decision to draw a clear line between their consumer range and prosumer by tagging one with SD and one with CF seems crazy. Also, I know bigger isn’t better, but cramming all these features into a camera the same size as their entry level D50 seems a bit strange too?

Ciaran, I did read that somewhere right enough that it was a D200 crammed into a smaller body. Then some months back I also read that the D200 was almost a D2x crammed into a D200 with extra features not available on a D2x. It is very strange. So do we have a D2x crammed into a D80 ?……….well almost !

Yup.. good point Gerry! I have the D2X and have used the D200 quite a bit and for the price difference between the two, had I have known that the D200 was on the way when I was buying mine, I would have held out. Feature wise, they’re VERY close. Ok, build quality is better, you get some extra mega pixels and the quality of the sensor/images are also a touch better, as is auto focus speed, number of fps etc. But for twice the price… is it worth the spend?? I’m not sure. The D200 isn’t far off the D2X IMO and if the D80 isn’t far off the D200 then that says to me it’s a very serious camera at a seriously low price.

Bought one in Berminghams at the weekend.
Absolutely delighted with it, so far so good.
